Lune can hold up to four at a time. To plan a turn, check the current description of the skill you want to use, then build the Stains it requires without overlooking enemy weaknesses or the four-Stain limit.
What Stains do
Stains are tied to Lune’s skills. A skill may generate one or more Stains; another may consume particular Stains to improve or change its effect. Guillaume Broche of Sandfall Interactive described the system as a way to combine skills and plan rotations, with powerful “overcharge” skills as a goal. In the official Xbox interview, Broche says Lune can have up to four Stains at a time.

Generation and consumption are distinct: using a skill that creates Stains does not mean every later skill will benefit from them. The skill you choose must call for the Stains you have. Enhanced effects vary by skill; they can include more damage, a duration change, or a lower AP cost, so do not assume every Stain-powered effect is simply a damage boost.
How to read Lune’s skill and Stain information
Use the skill description in your current game version as the authority. A Gamer Guides Lune guide describes the Stain gauge on the right side of the screen and says skill information distinguishes Stains generated from those needed for an enhanced effect. The exact display or skill behavior may differ after updates, so check the text shown in-game rather than relying on an older example.

The guide lists Ice (called Water in one example), Fire, Lightning, Earth, and Light Stains. It gives Immolation as a Fire-generating skill, Earth Rising as Earth-generating, Ice Lance as generating Water and Light, and Electrify as generating two Lightning Stains. These are examples, not a universal recipe: verify each skill’s current generation and consumption requirements in its description.
Plan a turn around the skill you want to empower
- Choose the target effect. Read the skill you want to use and note the Stains it consumes, along with the benefit of meeting that requirement.
- Build the required combination. Select skills that generate the needed Stains. Factor in the enemy’s weaknesses and the other effects or costs of those skills; there is no single rotation that is best for every fight.
- Check the gauge before spending. Lune’s maximum is four Stains, so account for the cap when choosing what to cast and when.
- Recheck version-sensitive interactions. Skill behavior can change in patches. For example, the official 1.4.0 patch notes changed Thermal Transfer so it no longer grants an extra turn when its Stain-consumption requirements are not met. Treat that as a documented change in version 1.4.0, not a guarantee about every later version.
Elemental Genesis is one guide example described as requiring Lightning, Earth, Fire, and Ice Stains. Because skill requirements can be version-sensitive, confirm the current requirement in-game before building a turn around it.

What the four-Stain cap means in practice
The cap is a planning constraint, not a reason to chase a particular fixed sequence. If Lune is already holding four Stains, a further generation opportunity cannot raise her stored amount above that maximum. Compare the Stains currently available with the requirements of the skill you want to empower, then choose a generating skill that moves you toward that requirement rather than following a memorized rotation.

Common misunderstanding
- “Every skill uses Stains.” No. Some skills generate them; others consume specified types for an enhanced effect. Check the individual skill text.
- “An enhanced skill always does more damage.” Not necessarily. The effect can vary, including changes to duration or AP cost.
- “I can store as many as I generate.” No. Lune’s stated maximum is four Stains at a time.
- “A guide’s sample combo must still work exactly the same.” Not guaranteed. The 1.4.0 Thermal Transfer change illustrates why current in-game requirements matter.
