To feed a villager in Minecraft, throw bread, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot near them and give them time to pick it up. For breeding, the Minecraft Wiki’s villager-farming tutorial says each villager needs 12 food points: three bread, 12 of any one listed vegetable, or a mix adding up to 12 points. Food alone does not guarantee a baby; the villagers must be willing and have beds available.
What food can you give a villager?
The villager-farming tutorial lists bread, carrots, potatoes, and beetroot as foods villagers can collect for breeding. Villagers do not eat from your hand like the player: toss the food nearby and let them pick it up into their inventory.
| Food | Points per item | Amount for 12 points |
|---|---|---|
| Bread | 4 | 3 |
| Carrots | 1 | 12 |
| Potatoes | 1 | 12 |
| Beetroot | 1 | 12 |
These values and the 12-point readiness threshold come from the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki tutorial; they are presented as general mechanics, not verified edition-by-edition values for every current Java and Bedrock version.
How to feed villagers for breeding
- Put two villagers in a safe area where they can reach dropped items.
- Throw bread, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot near them. Wait for each villager to collect the food.
- For each villager, provide three bread, 12 of one listed vegetable, or a combination totaling at least 12 points.
- Make sure the breeding area has beds. The tutorial’s simple post-1.14 setup uses three beds for two villagers and a potential baby.
Why won’t villagers breed after you feed them?
Food makes a villager eligible to become willing; it does not force an immediate baby. The tutorial says two villagers must be willing at the same time, and the setup must include beds. Check that both villagers collected enough food and can reach the available beds. The tutorial also notes that trading may increase willingness, but it is not required for the basic feeding method.

Can a farmer feed other villagers?
Yes. A farmer with access to nearby crops can gather food and share surplus with other villagers. This can support a more hands-off setup than repeatedly tossing food yourself.
