Check the LED beside the charging port: Steam says a lit LED means your Steam Deck is receiving charge. It can stay lit even after the battery is full, and it may dim after a few seconds as normal behavior.
What the charging light means
Steam’s Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide says, “If the LED is lit, the unit is receiving charge.” The indicator does not switch off when the battery reaches full charge, so a steady light is not evidence that charging is stuck.
The power LED may dim after a few seconds. Steam specifies 3–5 seconds generally and 15 seconds for OLED models. Dimming by itself does not mean the Deck stopped charging.
What to do if the light flashes or the Deck will not start
If the LED flashes after you press the power button, Steam says the battery is depleted. Connect the supplied power supply directly to the Deck, check that the LED lights, and let it charge for at least 15 minutes before trying to start it again.

First-use startup differs by model:
- LCD: Steam Decks with an LCD screen ship in battery-saving shipping mode. Plug the Deck in briefly using the supplied power supply to power it on.
- OLED: You can start an OLED model out of the box without plugging it in first by holding the power button for seven seconds.
If the battery stays below 100%
Steam says it can be normal for a Deck left under charge for a long time to discharge slowly instead of remaining at 100%. This behavior is intended to support long-term battery health; a reading below 100% alone does not show that charging has failed.
Charger and no-light checks
Steam identifies USB Power Delivery (USB PD) as the Deck’s charging standard and says the device does not support Fast Charging or Quick Charge specifications. For a depleted Deck, Steam’s instruction is to connect the supplied power supply directly. Its guide does not give a complete output specification for choosing a third-party charger, so it does not establish that any particular replacement charger is suitable.

If the supplied power supply is missing or faulty, a USB-C Power Delivery replacement may be relevant, but check its manufacturer-stated specifications rather than assuming compatibility. If there is no expected light or charging behavior, the indicator alone cannot identify the cause. See Steam Support’s troubleshooting guide for further help.
