Use Minecraft’s /locate command to find the nearest matching structure or biome. The official Minecraft guide’s example for a stronghold is /locate structure minecraft:stronghold. The exact target names and command options can vary by edition and version, so use the command suggestions in your game if an argument is rejected.

Find the nearest structure

Open chat, enter /locate structure minecraft:stronghold, and run the command. Minecraft’s official guide uses this as an example; it is not a complete list of valid structure names. The command reports the nearest matching target’s coordinates.

In Bedrock Edition, the documented structure form is /locate structure <structure> [useNewChunksOnly]. The optional useNewChunksOnly argument limits the search to newly generated chunks and defaults to false. Use the structure identifiers suggested by your game rather than assuming every identifier works in every edition or version.

Find a biome

In Bedrock Edition, use /locate biome <biome>, replacing <biome> with the biome identifier you want. The command searches the current dimension, not every dimension at once. If the requested structure or biome does not exist in that dimension, Bedrock can return an error.

Enable commands and check permissions

Bedrock single-player

Commands require cheats and Game Directors permission. To enable cheats, open the world settings, go to the Game tab, and turn on Allow Cheats. Enabling cheats permanently disables achievement unlocking in that world, even if you later turn cheats off again. This consequence applies to the Bedrock single-player guidance cited here.

Java single-player

Minecraft’s command guide says you can enable commands when creating a Java single-player world by turning on Allow Commands. The cited guidance does not establish the Bedrock achievement consequence for Java, so do not assume it applies there.

If the command does not work

  • Check the target name: Use the in-game command suggestions or autocomplete to see valid arguments for your edition and version. Minecraft’s command guide documents tab completion.
  • Check the dimension: In Bedrock, the search is limited to the current dimension. Travel to the dimension where the target can occur and try again.
  • Check permissions: In Bedrock, make sure cheats are enabled and you have the required Game Directors permission.
  • Check the command form: For Bedrock, use /locate structure or /locate biome followed by the target; do not assume syntax is identical across editions.
