Rename a name tag to Dinnerbone or Grumm in an anvil, then use it on a mob. The mob will appear upside down. This is an intentional Easter egg, not a game malfunction.
How to make the upside-down name tag effect
- Place a name tag in an anvil.
- Enter Dinnerbone or Grumm, using the spelling and capitalization shown.
- Take the renamed name tag from the anvil.
- Use the tag on the mob you want to affect.
The effect is associated with those two names, as documented in the Minecraft Wiki’s name tag entry. A how-to guide describes the anvil-and-mob steps.
What “glitch” means here
Players often call this a glitch, but it is a deliberate visual Easter egg: the named mob is rendered upside down. It does not mean the game is broken.
Do you need to craft the name tag?
If you already have a name tag, you can skip this. Minecraft’s Tiny Takeover Drop announcement says name tags are craftable using paper and any metal nugget.

Other name tag Easter eggs
Some other special names produce different effects: jeb_ makes a sheep’s wool cycle through colors, Toast gives a rabbit a special skin, and Johnny changes a vindicator’s behavior toward nearby mobs. These are separate effects from turning a mob upside down.

The basic method is documented, but the sources cited here do not establish a current edition-by-edition or mob-by-mob compatibility list. If the effect does not appear in your game, check that the tag was renamed exactly and applied to a mob; behavior may depend on the edition or entity.
