Brew each effect separately, then drink or apply the two potions one after the other. Redstone, glowstone, gunpowder, and dragon’s breath modify a potion’s duration, potency, or delivery form; they do not add a second effect.
How to brew an effect potion
Minecraft’s standard process starts with an Awkward Potion, then uses one effect ingredient to make a potion with its corresponding effect. The official Minecraft brewing guide describes this sequence and identifies nether wart as the base ingredient for nearly every potion recipe.
- Fill a glass bottle with water from a water source.
- Place the water bottle in a brewing stand and fuel the stand with blaze powder.
- Add nether wart to brew an Awkward Potion.
- Add the ingredient for the effect you want. For example, the official guide lists ghast tear for Regeneration, magma cream for Fire Resistance, golden carrot for Night Vision, and blaze powder for Strength.
To get two effects, repeat the effect-ingredient step in a separate brewing batch for the second potion. Keep the resulting potions in separate bottles; the documented brewing sequence does not include a recipe for combining two finished potions or adding two different effect ingredients to one bottle.
What modifiers and delivery ingredients do
These ingredients change an existing potion rather than add another status effect:
#1 Best Overall
- Redstone dust or glowstone dust: Changes a potion’s duration or potency, depending on the potion and recipe.
- Gunpowder: Converts a regular potion into a splash potion that can be thrown. It changes how the potion is delivered, not which effect it contains. See Minecraft’s splash-potion tutorial.
- Dragon’s breath: Added after gunpowder, it converts a splash potion into a lingering potion. This changes delivery form, not the effect.
Choose how to use the two potions
For effects on yourself, drink the two separate potions in succession. If you want to affect targets by throwing potions, brew the desired effects separately as splash potions and use them one after the other. Lingering potions are another delivery form, but they still carry the effect of the potion they were made from—not a second effect.
The Minecraft Wiki’s brewing reference reports that splash-potion duration matches the drinkable version in Java Edition and is three-fourths of that duration in Bedrock Edition; it also reports lingering duration as one-fourth. These are secondary-source figures, and the Wiki notes that parts of its page may be outdated, so check the current edition if duration matters to your plan. Minecraft Wiki: Brewing
