You can’t Mega Evolve in an unmodified Pokémon GBA game such as FireRed: that game does not include the mechanic. Some ROM hacks add it, but the unlock condition and button combination depend on the specific hack and version. Identify your game first, then follow its instructions.
Does Mega Evolution work in the original Pokémon GBA games?
No—not in unmodified FireRed. Mega Evolution is not part of that game, according to this FireRed Q&A. If you are playing an original GBA release rather than a modified ROM hack, there is no Mega Ring, Mega Stone, or button sequence that will activate it.
ROM hacks can add features that were not in the original games. A FireRed hack discussion, for example, describes adding later-generation mechanics and Mega Evolution-inspired changes, but that does not mean every hack includes the feature: FireRed ROM-hack discussion.
How to Mega Evolve in a ROM hack
First identify the hack and its version. The examples below use different implementations, so neither control should be treated as a universal GBA command.

Complete Fire Red Upgrade
- Make sure you have a Mega Ring. The hack’s documentation describes it as a requirement, except when a debug configuration changes that requirement.
- In battle, open the move menu. When the Mega trigger appears, press Start to activate it. The Complete Fire Red Upgrade documentation describes this control for its implementation.
Radical Red
A forum answer for Radical Red says to equip the Pokémon with its proper Mega Stone, then press Select before choosing a move: Radical Red player discussion. Treat this as version-specific forum guidance and check the instructions for the release you are playing.
Energized Emerald
The project page for Pokémon Energized Emerald says Mega Evolution becomes available after you beat the postgame and earn all gold Battle Frontier symbols. That is an unlock gate for this hack, not a general requirement for Emerald or other hacks.

What to check if the command does nothing
- Confirm the game: distinguish an original Pokémon GBA release from a ROM hack.
- Check whether the hack includes Mega Evolution: features vary, and some hacks use related changes without implementing the same mechanic.
- Check the unlock: a hack may gate Mega Evolution behind story or postgame progress.
- Check the required item: one implementation may require a Mega Ring, another a compatible held Mega Stone, or both.
- Use the correct battle control: Start and Select are not interchangeable universal shortcuts; follow the instructions for your exact hack version.
