To add a datapack to a Minecraft: Java Edition Realm, download the Realm world, add the pack to that world’s local save, test the save in single-player, then upload or replace the Realm world. This is a save-transfer workaround: the sources reviewed do not show a direct in-Realm Java datapack upload control. If you mean Bedrock Edition, use its Add-Ons settings instead; Bedrock Add-Ons are not Java datapacks.
First, check which Minecraft edition you use

The steps below are for Java Edition. Minecraft’s official Java Realm download instructions explain how to bring a Realm world into single-player. The datapack-folder part of this workaround is described in community guidance, rather than in an official Minecraft installation procedure.

Add a datapack to a Java Realm
1. Download the Realm world
- In Minecraft: Java Edition, open Minecraft Realms and select the Realm.
- Choose Configure, then open World Backups.
- Select Download Latest, then choose Continue. Minecraft says the downloaded world is added to your single-player worlds.
Labels can change between game-client versions, so if the wording differs, use the current Realms world-management controls. Minecraft’s download help page is the official reference for this step.
2. Make a separate recovery copy
Duplicate the downloaded save before editing it, and leave that copy untouched. This gives you a local fallback if the datapack causes problems or you select the wrong save when uploading.

Realms also creates automatic saves. Minecraft says these are made every 30 minutes, when you use Save & Quit, and “Any time you disconnect from your Realm.” The backup schedule is finite: the four most recent saves are retained; older saves are kept at decreasing intervals, and saves 122 or more days old are not retained. 3. Put the pack in the downloaded world
Community installation reports describe placing the datapack in the downloaded world save’s datapacks folder. The reviewed official Minecraft pages do not document this folder step or establish universal rules for whether a particular pack should be installed as a ZIP or folder. Follow the pack creator’s current instructions, including any Minecraft-version requirements, and check that the pack’s files are arranged as the creator specifies.

The folder you need belongs to the world save you downloaded—not the Realm itself. For additional context on Java Realm world management, see Minecraft’s Manage Realms Worlds page. A legacy user-submitted report on the Mojang Bug Tracker and a community discussion about adding datapacks to an ongoing Realm also describe the save-based approach; they are not official installation guarantees.
4. Open and test the edited save locally
Launch the modified world in single-player and check that the pack loads and that its intended features work. Compatibility depends on both the datapack and the Minecraft version. There is no universal compatibility guarantee for arbitrary datapacks on Realms, so a successful local test is useful but does not prove every player or Realm setup will behave identically.

5. Upload the edited save to the Realm
Use the Java Realms world-management upload or replace workflow to publish the modified local world to the intended Realm slot. Minecraft lists an official guide to managing Realm worlds, including uploading a world, but the guidance reviewed does not specify every current screen or button in the upload flow.
Replacing the active world changes the world Realm members enter. If you have a spare slot and want to check the result before switching, use it for a trial; otherwise, confirm that you selected the intended Realm and retained your untouched local copy before replacing the active save.

If you meant Bedrock Edition
Bedrock Realms use Add-Ons, including Resource Packs and Behavior Packs, rather than Java datapacks. Minecraft’s official Bedrock Add-Ons instructions describe this in-game route:
- Select the Realm and open the relevant world slot’s Edit World settings.
- Under Add-Ons, open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Activate the Add-On you want and confirm the changes.
- Wait for the Realm to upload the changes.
Minecraft says players connecting from Bedrock devices automatically download and apply Add-Ons activated on that Realm. This applies to Bedrock Add-Ons, not Java datapacks.
