In the CVC word-family version, players roll two foam dice, say the word the dice spell, and move to its next spot on the board; other versions use a die roll to select a letter or math task. Follow the instructions for your specific board.
How to play the CVC word-family version
In this version, players use two foam dice to build and read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, then race along a board. The instructions recommend one game piece per player and say the game works best with 2–3 players. [CVC game instructions]
- Each player puts a game piece on START.
- On your turn, roll both foam dice.
- Combine the onset and rime shown on the dice, then say the word aloud.
- Find the next instance of that word on the board and move your piece there.
- Take turns repeating the roll, read, and move sequence until a player reaches END.
How other Roll and Race boards work
The name also appears on activities with different learning targets and turn rules. Do not combine their instructions: the board determines what a roll means and how progress is marked.
| Version | What the roll selects | What the player does | How it ends or is played |
|---|---|---|---|
| Letter recognition [instructions] | A dot cube result, checked against a board key for a target letter. | Identify the number and target letter. A match advances one space; a non-match does not. | In turn-taking play, players race toward the finish. In independent practice, the learner covers spaces and repeats; a larger activity ends when all spaces are covered. |
| Kindergarten math [instructions] | A column. | Solve and mark the first available problem in that column. | The first player to reach the top of a column wins. |
| Math-fact practice [instructions] | A dot cube result corresponding to a math fact. | Solve the addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division fact, then cover it with a counter or math cube, or color it. | The first player to reach the top of a column wins. |
| Base-ten practice [instructions] | A die result corresponding to a row. | Solve the first problem in that row; the cited resource practices base-ten numbers from 100–1,000. | The resource describes row-based practice; it does not state a separate race finish condition. |
What you need
Use the materials specified on your board. The CVC game calls for two foam dice and player pieces; the letter-recognition and math-fact activities use a dot cube. Depending on the activity, you may also need counters, math cubes, other manipulatives, or something to write or color with. Some math-fact boards allow coloring instead of reusable markers. How to tell which rules your board uses
- Look at the learning task: the board may ask players to form and read a word, identify a letter, solve a math fact, or work through a row or column of problems.
- Check what happens after a roll: players may move a game piece, cover or color a space, or solve and mark a problem.
- Find the finish condition: it may be reaching END, covering every space, or being the first player to the top of a column. Some practice resources do not specify a race finish.
If your board’s directions do not match the CVC steps above, use its own key and rules. These activities share a roll-and-respond format, but their prompts, markers, and win conditions differ.
