To reduce future encounters near a base or mine, light dark areas with torches. Neither tactic works against every mob or every attack, so the right response depends on what is after you.
What to do when a mob is attacking now
- Break its line of sight. Step behind a solid block, enter a building, or quickly wall yourself in. Minecraft’s beginner guide recommends using dirt or cobblestone for a quick barrier and says a hostile mob will not attack if it cannot see you. This buys safety; it does not remove the mob.
- Stay out of ranged attacks. If a skeleton is shooting arrows, put blocks between you and it, move sideways rather than remaining exposed, or use a shield. These responses address the projectile; simply standing in an open doorway may leave you vulnerable.
- Retreat if you do not want to fight. You can wait behind cover or move away when it is safe. If you choose to fight, basic weapons such as swords or axes are options, but the right choice depends on the mob and your equipment.

How to reduce hostile mobs around a base or mine
Place torches and other light sources in dark areas, including enclosed routes and self-dug mine shafts. Mojang advises lighting these areas to reduce the risk of ordinary hostile mobs spawning there. Lighting is not a force field: it does not stop every hostile entity, and some mobs can appear in daylight.
Do not treat a creator spawn-rule setting as a universal Survival command. Microsoft’s Bedrock spawn rules documentation describes how creators configure conditions such as brightness, difficulty and distance. It does not establish one command that players can use in every world to disable mob attacks.

Check whether the mob is hostile or conditional
Not every mob attacks on sight. Minecraft’s mob guide separates creatures into passive, hostile and neutral categories: passive mobs do not attack, hostile mobs attack when able, and neutral mobs may turn hostile after a trigger. The trigger varies by creature; for example, Endermen become hostile if attacked or stared at. If your goal is to avoid a fight, do not hit or provoke a neutral mob.
The categories and examples are described in Mojang’s Minecraft mobs guide. Check the particular mob’s behavior rather than assuming that every creature follows the same rule.

If phantoms keep returning, sleep
Mojang says phantoms appear if a player has not slept for a few in-game days and recommends sleeping to avoid encountering them. This is a phantom-specific precaution, not a general way to turn off hostile mobs. See the phantom section of the official mob guide.

What these tips do not establish
The official guides cited here were published in 2023, while Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation was last updated January 28, 2026. These sources do not establish precise current Java-versus-Bedrock light thresholds, universal mob-aggro distances, or a global command for disabling attacks. Game behavior can vary by edition and version, so avoid relying on a specific threshold or command unless it has been verified for your setup.
