The most reliable way to tell is to check the chunk’s coordinates with a finder for your Minecraft edition. Java slime chunks depend on the world seed; Bedrock slime chunks are position-based according to the current finder. You can also look for slimes underground below Y=40, but seeing—or not seeing—one is not a definitive test.
First, identify your edition and version
Use the edition you actually play when checking a map. The current Minecraft Tools Slime Chunk Finder labels its support through version 26.3 and was updated on 2 October 2026. It says Java patterns depend on the world seed, while Bedrock patterns depend on chunk position alone. The site is third-party, not an official Mojang service, so confirm its edition and version settings before relying on its result.
Version can matter: Mojang’s issue tracker records a Bedrock slime-spawn-rule fix in Preview 1.19.10.23, with expected parity to Java rules. The MCPE-156411 issue now requires login to view directly.
Find the chunk coordinates
Chunks are 16 by 16 blocks horizontally. You need the chunk’s X and Z coordinates, which are different from your block coordinates.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed in an easy-to-collect size, the Minecraft Sticky Piston Trap set brings the video game action in-home with an action figure, accessories and a "Redstone Charged" trap with motion feature!
- Kids can use the "Redstone Charged" trap to stick on the included figure, then push the button and watch it slide forward!
- The 3.25 inch-scale action figure is squishy and sticky so it holds to the piston for a powerful punch!
- There are also 2 smaller that fit inside the larger block for added play and display of a favorite video game moment!
- With so much action packed in, this collectible Minecraft set makes a fun, themed gift for video-game players and fans ages 6 years old and up!
Java: read the F3 screen
- In the world, press F3 to open the debug screen.
- Find the “Chunk” line and note its X and Z values.
- Use those chunk coordinates to inspect your location in a finder.
Calculate them from block coordinates
If you have block coordinates instead, divide X and Z by 16 and round each result down to the next whole number. This is mathematical floor, especially important for negative coordinates: block X=-1 is in chunk X=-1, not chunk 0. Chunk boundaries occur at multiples of 16. A community explanation of chunk boundaries is available in the Minecraft Forum discussion.
Check the chunk with a finder
- Select Java or Bedrock to match your game.
- For Java, enter the world seed as well as the chunk coordinates. The same coordinates can have different slime-chunk results in different Java seeds.
- For Bedrock, the current finder says a seed is not needed for slime-chunk locations; check the coordinates and version selection.
- Inspect the candidate chunk on the map and verify that you entered the right seed and coordinates.
A seed-based map is a prediction, not an official in-game indicator. The finder describes Java slime chunks as a roughly 1-in-10 per-chunk roll; that is an algorithmic probability, not a promise that every small area contains exactly one slime chunk. The Minecraft Wiki’s slime-farming tutorial also describes the 10% chance.
Rank #2
- Get ready for slime-spewing action with the Minecraft Legends giant figure of the Devourer and the courageous Ranger 3.25 in-scale action figure.
- Attach the mushroom spore to the Devourer and pour in the included slime.
- Tilt down the Devourer and squeeze the mushroom spore to launch a disgustingly hilarious vomit attack all over the Ranger.
- The designs and personality details of these character figures stay true to the unique, pixelated world of Minecraft Legends.
- Adventurous fun for kids who love exploration, battling, and survival -- the Minecraft way.
Use spawning as a check, not a guarantee
Slimes can spawn inside slime chunks below Y=40, at any light level, according to the current finder. An open, lit underground area can therefore be used to observe whether slimes appear; darkness is not required for this spawn route.
One empty visit does not prove the chunk is not a slime chunk. Spawning depends on conditions, and the available sources establish no guaranteed wait time or definitive in-game diagnostic test. Treat actual spawning as supporting evidence rather than a conclusive check.

Do not mistake swamp slimes for proof
Swamp surface spawns are a separate route from slime-chunk spawns. They depend on conditions such as moon phase and can occur regardless of whether the chunk is a slime chunk. Finding a slime in a swamp therefore does not identify the chunk beneath it as a slime chunk.
Quick Recap
Quick comparison
| Method | What you need | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Finder map: Java | Edition, world seed, and chunk coordinates | Predicts slime-chunk locations for the selected inputs. |
| Finder map: Bedrock | Edition and chunk coordinates; the current finder says no seed is needed | Predicts locations using the position-based pattern described by the finder. |
| Observe underground spawning | Candidate chunk, open area below Y=40, and suitable spawning conditions | Slime spawns support the identification; no spawn during a visit is not proof against it. |
| Observe swamp spawning | A swamp and its surface spawning conditions | Does not establish that the chunk is a slime chunk. |
If the result looks wrong
- Map points to another location: recheck the world seed, edition, and whether you entered block coordinates or chunk coordinates.
- Coordinates are negative: floor the result of dividing block coordinates by 16; do not truncate toward zero.
- No slimes appear underground: confirm you are below Y=40 and in the candidate chunk, then allow for the fact that a failed observation is not conclusive.
- You found a slime in a swamp: do not use that alone to label the chunk; swamp spawns are independent.
