In Commander, you can normally play one land during each of your turns. Effects can give you additional land plays, and there is no fixed maximum when they do. A land put onto the battlefield by an effect is not a land play and does not use your allowance.
How many lands can you play in a turn?
The baseline is one land play per turn. Magic’s Comprehensive Rules, effective September 25, 2026, say that continuous effects may increase that number. Your allowance is the number of land plays currently available to you; the number you have already played this turn is tracked separately. You cannot make another land play once the number used equals or exceeds your current allowance. Wizards of the Coast Comprehensive Rules, rule 305.2
Additional-land effects can add together
Some cards explicitly let you play extra lands on your turns. Azusa, Lost but Seeking grants two additional land plays each turn; Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait grants one. Wizards’ release notes clarify that these effects are cumulative with other effects that allow additional land plays: Azusa’s Commander Masters release notes and Aesi’s Commander Legends release notes. The applicable total depends on the effects that currently apply and how many lands you have already played that turn.
When can you play a land?
A normal land play from your hand is a special action: you can take it during a main phase of your own turn when you have priority and the stack is empty. You cannot play a land during an opponent’s turn. These timing rules are in Comprehensive Rules 305.1 and 305.3. Official Comprehensive Rules

Can you play one land in each main phase?
Not by default. A land played in your first main phase uses your ordinary land play for the turn, so you cannot play another in your second main phase unless an effect gives you an additional land play. Wizards’ beginner guide to Magic explains this ordinary case; additional-land effects can change it.
Does putting a land onto the battlefield count as playing one?
No. Playing a land and putting a land onto the battlefield are different actions. An effect that says to put a land onto the battlefield does not use a land play and does not count as a land played that turn. Comprehensive Rules 305.4 makes this distinction explicit. Official Comprehensive Rules

Does Commander set a maximum number of lands in your deck?
No fixed land count is prescribed by the official Commander format information. Commander decks contain 100 cards: 99 cards plus a commander, with a singleton rule and an exception for basic lands. How many lands to include is a deck-building choice, separate from how many lands you may play during a turn. Wizards’ Commander format page
