In Pokémon X, use Charizardite X to get Mega Charizard X; in Pokémon Y, use Charizardite Y to get Mega Charizard Y. In either game, choosing Charmander from Professor Sycamore gives you the matching stone, while the other starter stones are available at the Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue. Pokémon Legends: Z-A features both forms, but its official Mega Evolution page does not give the steps for obtaining either Charizardite.
Which Mega Charizard can you unlock?
The version determines which Charizard form is available in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. The Pokémon Company’s Pokémon X/Y Mega Stone Guide lists both as main-story Mega Stones:
| Game | Stone | Form |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon X | Charizardite X | Mega Charizard X |
| Pokémon Y | Charizardite Y | Mega Charizard Y |
These are version-specific stones: Charizardite X is for Pokémon X, and Charizardite Y is for Pokémon Y.
How to get Charizardite in Pokémon X or Y
If you chose Charmander
Choose Charmander at Professor Sycamore’s lab and you receive the Charizardite that matches your game: Charizardite X in Pokémon X or Charizardite Y in Pokémon Y.

Do you need the post-game Mega Ring upgrade?
No, not for Charizardite X or Y. The official guide classifies them as main-story Mega Stones. Its separate post-game instructions concern certain long-lost stones that become findable after powering up the Mega Ring; they are not the stated acquisition path for Charizardite X or Y.

- Defeat Serena or Calem near Kiloude City’s north pond.
- Talk to Serena or Calem to hear the professor’s message.
- Meet Professor Sycamore near the great sundial in Anistar City.
How Mega Evolution works in Legends: Z-A
The official Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolution page confirms that Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y appear in the game. It describes a Trainer’s Key Stone resonating with the Mega Stone held by a Pokémon, and says the Trainer eventually wears a Mega Ring with a Key Stone embedded in it.

So it confirms the forms and the general Mega Evolution mechanism, but not the Charizard-specific acquisition steps. The Pokémon X/Y starter and Stone Emporium instructions above should not be assumed to apply to Legends: Z-A.
Does the Alpha Charizard Mystery Gift unlock Mega Charizard?
No. The official December 9, 2025 Alpha Charizard announcement offered a Charizard through Mystery Gift; it does not say the gift included a Mega Stone or unlocked Mega Evolution. Its claim window ran from December 9, 2025, through January 19, 2026, and has ended.

In general, Mega Evolution uses the appropriate Mega Stone held by the Pokémon and a Key Stone worn by the Trainer. The official Pokémon Mega Evolution overview explains this relationship. In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, first get the version-matched Charizardite described above; for Legends: Z-A, the cited official page does not establish the Charizardite locations or unlock steps.
