How to Update Minecraft Without Losing Your Worlds

Make a verified copy before updating Minecraft. Backup steps differ for Java, Bedrock, Realms, Xbox, iPhone and iPad, and Bedrock Editor.

To update Minecraft with the least risk, first make a separate copy of each important world and confirm that copy is available; then update through the official launcher, store, or console update system for your device. Steps differ between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, Realms, and platforms, so do not assume a backup or file path for one setup protects another. Official guidance supports backing up before changes, but does not establish that ordinary Minecraft updates routinely delete worlds.

Will updating Minecraft delete your worlds?

The official support information cited here does not quantify world loss during updates or show that routine updates routinely erase saves. Still, a separate backup is a sensible safeguard before a consequential change. A world stored locally, on a Realm, or in a platform cloud-save system can have different backup and recovery options.

Before following any instructions, identify whether you play Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, what device you use, and whether the world is local or on a Realm. Console cloud-save features may also apply. A menu path or file-copy method for one edition or device may not work for another.

How to protect a world before updating

  1. Save and quit cleanly. For a Realm, Minecraft Help says a save is created when a player chooses Save & Quit and when they disconnect; Realms also saves at intervals. See Minecraft Help’s Realms backup information.
  2. Make a separate copy using a method supported for your edition and device. Use the appropriate Realm download, platform cloud-save check, or device-specific file copy below. Do not rely on the active world as its own backup.
  3. Verify the copy. Check that it appears in the expected destination or in the game’s world list before proceeding. If you use add-ons or behavior packs, preserve the world before changing them as well. Minecraft Education’s Teachers Guide to Add-Ons advises exporting a backup before enabling packs on an existing world and notes that add-ons can change world data in ways that may be difficult to reverse. That guidance concerns add-on changes, not evidence that routine game updates delete worlds.
  4. Update through the official mechanism for your installation. Use the launcher, app store, or console’s update system. The backup procedures below do not establish one universal update menu path for every platform.

Back up a world on a Realm

Realm downloads give you a copy outside the active Realm. The steps depend on edition.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Bedrock Edition Realms

  1. Launch Minecraft and open Play, then the Realms tab.
  2. Enter the Realm Hub and open the World tab and Slots.
  3. Open the menu beside Edit world and choose Download World.
  4. Confirm the downloaded copy appears under All Worlds.

These steps are documented in Minecraft Help’s Bedrock Realm download guide. A downloaded world is a copy; it does not replace the Realm’s current save.

Java Edition Realms

  1. Open Minecraft Realms and choose the Realm.
  2. Select Configure, then World Backups.
  3. Choose Download Latest and select Continue.
  4. Look for the downloaded world in your single-player worlds.

Minecraft Help documents this route in its Java Realm download guide.

Restore a Bedrock Realm save carefully

A Bedrock Realm can be restored from a manual or automatic save through the Realm Hub’s World tab and the save menu. Restoration rolls the Realm back to the selected save point, so builds and items gained afterward are not retained. Download a copy first if you want to preserve the current state, and choose the restore point deliberately. Minecraft Help explains Realm restoration.

What Realms backups cover

Minecraft Help says Realms creates backups every 30 minutes, on Save & Quit, and when a player disconnects. Its published retention policy keeps the four newest saves; within the last 24 hours, one save every 4 hours; from 1 to 8 days, one per day; from 9 to 36 days, one per week; and from 37 to 121 days, one per month. It says saves from 122 or more days ago are not retained. These are service policies, not a guarantee that every desired version remains available indefinitely; check the current Minecraft Help backup policy before relying on an older snapshot.

Check Xbox cloud-save status

Minecraft Help says Xbox cloud saves are associated with the Microsoft account. New worlds are backed up automatically when the console is online and signed in; a world created offline is backed up when next played. A world that is not played remains on the device until it is backed up, so do not assume every save is already in the cloud.

  1. In Minecraft, open Settings > Storage > Manage Worlds.
  2. Check whether the world is marked cloud-synced, cloud-only, or local-only.
  3. If it is local-only, use the available upload option to upload it before updating.

See Minecraft Help’s Xbox backup and restore instructions for the documented status and upload guidance.

Copy worlds from an iPhone or iPad

Minecraft Help’s iOS procedure applies to worlds created on that iPhone or iPad; it is not a method for Java Edition saves on a Mac, nor should it be applied to Android or consoles.

  1. Connect the iOS device to a Mac with a USB cable.
  2. Open Finder and select the connected device.
  3. Open Files, expand the Minecraft folder, and drag the games folder to the desktop or another destination.
  4. Confirm the copied folder is present before updating.

Minecraft Help also notes that iCloud can back up the games folder. Follow its backup and restore instructions only for the device and edition they cover.

Bedrock Editor exports: use the format for the project

Bedrock Editor has export options intended for its project workflow; they are not a universal backup menu for every Bedrock player. In an Editor project, use File > Export. The changelog distinguishes these formats:

Export File format Purpose described
Project Backup .mcproject Packaged Editor-project archive
World Template .mctemplate World template
Shareable World .mcworld Playable world file

These options and descriptions are listed in the Bedrock changelog. It also describes Windows cloud backup as an early preview/release feature; availability can vary by release channel, so verify that it is available in your installation before depending on it.

If a world is missing or damaged after an update

  • Check the edition and world list. Confirm you launched the same edition and account as before, then check the relevant local worlds, Realm downloads, or cloud-only saves.
  • Check sync status before overwriting anything. On Xbox, inspect Settings > Storage > Manage Worlds for local-only or cloud-only status. Avoid replacing a potentially newer copy until you know which save contains the progress you need.
  • Restore only from a save point you understand. A Realm restore reverts the world to that snapshot; progress made afterward is lost from the restored Realm.
  • Keep the backup separate. Do not delete or overwrite the copied world until you have confirmed the updated game opens the world and the expected builds and items are present.

The official materials cited here document particular Realm, Xbox, iOS, and Editor workflows; they do not establish one recovery procedure for every device or a universal way to repair a damaged local save. Use the support instructions for the exact platform and edition rather than substituting another platform’s file paths.
