If you want to install a CurseForge modpack, import its ZIP in the CurseForge app; simply extracting the archive does not install it. If you only want to inspect the files, use your computer’s ZIP or archive tool to extract them into a folder.
Import the ZIP to install a CurseForge modpack
- Open the CurseForge app and go to Minecraft.
- Choose Import, then choose the option to import a profile ZIP.
- Find and select the downloaded
.zipfile. - Let CurseForge create the modpack as a new Minecraft profile.
- Select the new profile to launch it.
This import flow is for a modpack or custom profile ZIP that matches CurseForge’s export structure—not any archive that happens to contain Minecraft files. CurseForge also supports importing a profile with a code; its support article says codes are valid for seven days. See CurseForge’s profile import and custom profile instructions.

Extract the files only if you want to inspect them
Use your computer’s ZIP or archive handling to unpack the file into a folder. Extraction lets you view the archive’s contents, but it does not create or register a playable launcher profile. If your goal is to play the pack, use the CurseForge import flow instead.
Check whether the ZIP has the right structure
A CurseForge submission-format archive has manifest.json at the ZIP’s root, with an overrides folder for other included files such as configurations, scripts, maps, saves, resources, or mods. This is a useful clue for that format, but a ZIP containing loose mods, a single mod, a world, or a datapack is not an importable profile through CurseForge’s profile-import flow. Fix an invalid-file or launch problem
- Confirm the file. Make sure the download is actually a ZIP and is a modpack or custom profile archive, not a zipped folder of unrelated or loose files.
- Check its layout. For a CurseForge submission-format ZIP, confirm that
manifest.jsonis directly inside the archive and that the expected profile structure is intact. - Repair and retry. If the archive appears correctly structured, try Repair Installation in the CurseForge app and import it again. CurseForge’s invalid-file guidance covers this issue.
- Ask for help if it still fails. Contact the modpack creator or CurseForge and follow their support instructions for sharing relevant app logs or the file. See CurseForge support guidance and its instructions for sharing a profile.
- For a profile that imports but will not run, check compatibility. The modpack, Minecraft version, and modloader must be compatible. CurseForge identifies Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt among its loader options; a version or loader mismatch can prevent compatibility. See CurseForge’s modloader overview.
Keep in mind that mods are third-party software
Minecraft Help says, “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” It also notes that Mojang Studios does not create, review, or endorse mods. Download from a source you trust and follow the pack creator’s instructions. Read Minecraft’s mod guidance.
