To upgrade a Minecraft Realm, first identify whether it is a Bedrock or Java subscription, then manage it through the account or platform that started the subscription. Bedrock owners can begin in the Realm Hub; Java owners should check their Microsoft account subscriptions. Before replacing a world or setting up another Realm, download a copy: loading a world onto a Realm that already has one overwrites that Realm’s world and saved progress.

Choose the right Realm plan first

Bedrock Realms and Java Realms are separate subscriptions. Bedrock supports players on supported Bedrock devices; Java Realms is for Java Edition players. The plan that fits depends on your edition, how many people need to play at once, and whether you want access to the Realms Plus content catalog.

Plan Simultaneous players Included content US listed price
Bedrock Realms Realm owner plus 2 players Always-online Realm and backups $3.99 USD/month, listed by Minecraft in 2026
Bedrock Realms Plus Realm owner plus 10 players Always-online Realm, backups, and access to the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog $7.99 USD/month, listed by Minecraft in 2026
Java Realms Realm owner plus 10 players Java Realms subscription; no Marketplace Pass catalog $7.99 USD/month, listed by Minecraft in 2026

These are Minecraft’s US-listed monthly prices checked on October 8, 2026, not guaranteed checkout totals elsewhere. Prices may vary by region and purchase platform. Realms Plus catalog access is a subscription benefit; if you want to keep a favorite catalog item permanently, Minecraft recommends purchasing it before it leaves the catalog. See Minecraft’s Realms plan page for current plan details.

Change a Bedrock Realm subscription

  1. Launch Minecraft and select Play.
  2. Open the Realms tab, then select your Realm’s Realm Hub.
  3. Open Settings and find Subscription.
  4. Review the subscription details and the available management or plan-change options. If the plan you want is offered, follow the prompts shown for your account.

Minecraft’s current Bedrock documentation describes subscription management in the Realm Hub, including viewing and changing a subscription. It does not establish that every existing plan can be converted in place on every platform. If the desired option is not shown, check the subscription controls for the platform or account used to buy the Realm, or contact Minecraft Support before canceling or purchasing another plan. See Minecraft’s Bedrock Realm settings guidance and the Bedrock 26.20 changelog.

Check billing on the original purchase platform

The account or platform that started a Bedrock subscription may control its billing. If payment details or subscription options are unavailable in Minecraft, check that purchase account’s subscription settings. On PC, Minecraft directs subscribers to the Microsoft account associated with the subscription to update payment details; the in-game subscription list may indicate when a Realm was started on another platform. Minecraft’s PC payment-method instructions explain the account route.

Console multiplayer may also require the console’s online service. Check the current requirement and service name for your specific device; Minecraft’s setup guidance lists Xbox Live Gold, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online. Read Minecraft’s Bedrock Realm setup guide.

Change or renew a Java Realms subscription

Do not use Bedrock’s Realm Hub steps for a Java subscription. Sign in to the Microsoft account used for Java Realms, open the account’s subscriptions, and locate the Java Realms subscription to view its next renewal date and related subscription details. Use that account’s controls for renewal and payment management. Minecraft’s Java renewal-date instructions describe where to find it.

Protect your world before replacing or moving it

Download the existing world and confirm the copy is available before proceeding with a new Realm or a world transfer. Minecraft warns that loading a selected world onto a Realm that already has a world replaces the existing world and its saved progress. The Bedrock Realm setup guide covers world loading and replacement.

Renew an expired Bedrock Realm

  1. Start Minecraft and select Play.
  2. Open Realms, then the Realm Hub for the expired Realm.
  3. Go to Settings > Subscription > Manage Subscription.
  4. Complete the purchase flow to resubscribe.

Minecraft says you can download an expired Realm’s worlds for 18 months after expiration, and resubscribing within that window restores Realm access. Its FAQ states, “Your worlds are yours to keep.” See Minecraft’s Bedrock renewal instructions and the Realms FAQ.
