To use Easy NPC in Minecraft Java Edition, install the mod files that match your Minecraft version and mod loader, spawn an NPC, then open its editor with the Easy NPC wand, by sneaking and right-clicking it, or with /easy_npc configure <NPC>. From there, configure the options you need, such as dialogs, trades, appearance, or actions. Easy NPC is a Java mod; these steps do not apply to Minecraft Bedrock’s built-in NPC editor.
Choose the correct Easy NPC files
Easy NPC offers builds for multiple Minecraft versions and loaders, including Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. Check the current file list on the CurseForge project page or Modrinth, and match both the version of Minecraft and the mod loader used by your instance. A file for the wrong game version or loader may not load.
For most players, the maintainer recommends the Easy NPC Bundle. It includes Core and Configuration UI, and supported launchers can resolve dependencies automatically. If you install manually, put both modules in the instance’s mods folder. Core supplies NPC functionality and commands; Configuration UI adds the graphical editor and depends on Core. See the installation guide for module details.
Single-player and multiplayer module setup
- Single-player: Install a compatible bundle, or install Core and Configuration UI together if you want the graphical editor.
- Multiplayer with the graphical editor: The installation guide calls for Core and Configuration UI on both the server and clients because the modules communicate.
- Command-only server: Core alone can be used when the server does not need the configuration GUI.
When moving a modpack, copy its complete mods/ folder so required module files are not accidentally left behind.

- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Spawn and open an NPC
- Launch the Minecraft instance using the matching game version, loader, and Easy NPC modules.
- Spawn an NPC with its corresponding spawn egg or a summon command.
- Open the NPC’s editor using one of the documented options: use the Easy NPC wand, sneak and right-click the NPC, or run
/easy_npc configure <NPC>with the applicable NPC argument. - Choose the settings you need, then test the NPC in the world or server where it will be used.
The user guide documents the editor and available settings, but the command shown above is a command form rather than a complete example: use the version-specific Easy NPC user documentation to confirm the correct NPC argument and command details for your build.
Configure the features your NPC needs
You can start with one straightforward function and add complexity only when the NPC needs it. For example, give a character a dialog first; then add a trade or action if the map or quest calls for one. The project documents configurable dialogs, trades with offers and conditions, skins, and actions. Its user documentation also covers appearance and interaction options such as NPC types, equipment, poses, objectives, attributes, factions, and progression.

- Learn your way around one block at atime in the new tutorial mode
- Craft all sorts of items from boats todiamond armor and create enormousstructures
- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
- For a guide or quest character: Set up the relevant dialog, then test how a player triggers and advances it.
- For a shopkeeper: Configure the trade offers and any conditions attached to them, then verify the exchange in the intended game context.
- For an NPC that triggers something: Configure the appropriate action and check that it works with your server permissions and any other mods it relies on.
Not every NPC needs all of these systems. Presets can provide examples for more elaborate maps and modpacks; commands or permissions may be more practical than opening each NPC’s GUI individually. For quest-mod integrations, check the Easy NPC and quest mod documentation for the exact command syntax and permission requirements instead of assuming a spawn command will work unchanged.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The mod does not load: Recheck that the file matches both your Minecraft version and loader, and that the required modules are present.
- The configuration screen will not open: Confirm that Configuration UI is installed alongside Core. On multiplayer setups, verify the documented server and client module requirements.
- A command or action fails: Check the syntax for your installed version and confirm that the player or server has the required permissions.
- An NPC works in one world but not another: Test it in the intended server or modpack context, especially if its dialog or actions depend on another mod or server permissions.
Back up before changing major versions
Easy NPC has used a modular structure since its 6.x major version. The maintainer wiki describes 6.x as a rewrite that is not backwards compatible with older major versions. Before updating an existing world or modpack, read the Easy NPC wiki and upgrade guidance, and back up the world and NPC data. Do not assume that an older tutorial’s single-jar installation steps apply to a current build.
