Players pay nothing when they claim an offer, and Epic says the game stays in their library as a digital license. But Epic has not disclosed a current overall giveaway budget, the payment terms for each title, or whether any specific revenue stream—such as Fortnite—funds a particular offer.
What happens when you claim a free game?
Epic’s Store FAQ says a claimed game remains in the player’s library as a digital license. “Free” therefore describes the price to the player during the promotion; it does not mean the offer carries no cost for Epic or the publisher. Epic says it offers a new free game each week. Epic Games Store FAQs

Why does Epic give games away?
Epic identifies discovery and engagement as the program’s purpose. In its February 2026 report on 2025 activity, the company said the Free Games Program “continued to drive discovery and engagement.” Epic reported that players claimed 662 million titles through the program in 2025; that is a count of claimed titles, not unique players. It also said more than 77% of the free-offer games reached an all-time peak concurrent-user record on the Store during their offer week.
Those figures show reach and activity, not that claimants later bought games or that the program paid for itself. Epic also reported increased concurrent users on Steam for games while they were being offered free on Epic, illustrating that the attention can extend beyond Epic’s own Store. These are company-reported measures, not proof of sales conversion. Epic Games Store 2025 Year in Review

Where does the Store’s commercial activity fit in?
Giveaways sit alongside paid sales on the Store, but the available figures should not be confused with Epic’s revenue or profit. Epic reported that PC players spent $1.16 billion on the Epic Games Store in 2025, up 6% year over year. Players spent $400 million on third-party PC games, up 57%; Epic says that figure excludes some games whose developers process their own in-game payments. Both figures are player spending, not the amount Epic kept. Epic Games Store 2025 Year in Review
Epic’s current developer distribution page describes its standard Store revenue share as 88% to the developer and 12% to Epic for qualifying payments processed by Epic, after the developer retains the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product. Developers can also use their own payment systems inside games; Epic says it takes no revenue from those payments. The terms are part of the Store’s broader business model, not an explanation of how a particular giveaway is funded. Epic Games Store Distribution

For qualifying Unreal Engine games, Epic says engine royalties are waived on eligible in-Store purchases processed by Epic. That waiver does not apply to in-app purchases or purchases processed through a developer’s own payment system. Epic’s 2025 announcement said the first-$1-million allowance resets annually from 2026. Check the current terms for details. Epic’s revenue-share update
Does Fortnite pay for Epic’s free games?
Epic operates a wider games business that includes free-to-play games and optional paid content, which provides context for its ability to invest in the Store. However, the cited public materials do not trace the funding for any particular giveaway to Fortnite, Unreal Engine royalties, or another specific revenue source. It would be inaccurate to say that Fortnite directly pays for a given free game without evidence of that allocation.

Epic describes financial support for development and marketing as part of some exclusivity arrangements. That statement does not mean every free-game offer is an exclusivity deal, or establish the payment terms for any specific giveaway. Epic Games Store FAQs
What do historical Store losses tell us?
In its 2021 findings in Epic Games, Inc. v. Apple Inc., a federal court described the Store’s 88/12 commission as below cost and said Epic expected the Store to operate at a loss for many years at that rate. That historical finding helps explain why Epic might treat Store growth as a strategic investment rather than expect every promotion to generate immediate profit. It is not a current financial statement and does not establish today’s cost or return on free-game offers. Court findings in Epic Games, Inc. v. Apple Inc.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What Epic has not disclosed
Epic’s cited public materials do not state a current total budget for free-game promotions, the payment terms for each title, or whether claims lead to enough later purchases to cover the cost. The figures available describe program activity, Store spending, and general business terms—not a per-game funding breakdown or a current profitability calculation.
