What multiplayer modes does Civilization VI have?
The Civilization VI Online Manual lists three multiplayer modes. They connect people in different ways; Hot Seat is not split-screen.

- Internet: Connect with other players remotely over the Internet.
- Local Network: Play over a local network, such as a LAN.
- Hot Seat: Share one device and take turns playing.
As the manual puts it, “Multiplayer games let you pit your skills directly against other players rather than against just computer-controlled AI.”
How do you start a multiplayer game?
- Open Multiplayer from the game’s main menu.
- Choose Internet, Local Network, or Hot Seat according to where the players are and whether they will share a device.
- Create or join a game using the appropriate mode.
- Before setting up, confirm that everyone’s platform and storefront can connect, that game versions are compatible, and that the group has agreed on any relevant DLC.
- Have the host choose the game options and provide the details needed for others to join.
The available manual confirms the mode choices, but lobby controls and invitation steps can vary by platform and version; check the current in-game prompts rather than relying on a universal set of button names.

Can you play Civilization VI with friends on another platform?
Sometimes, but there is no basis for assuming every edition connects to every other one. Aspyr’s support pages document specific desktop cases: Mac Steam players can play online with Steam users when versions are synchronized, and Linux Steam players can do the same. Aspyr says Mac and Linux Steam crossplay with the Epic Games Store is not supported.
These are platform- and storefront-specific conditions, not a blanket crossplay guarantee for PC, consoles, and mobile. Before buying or creating a lobby, compare each player’s platform and store, check the current version, and consult the relevant platform support information. For the documented Mac and Linux Steam cases, synchronized versions are an explicit requirement.

How does multiplayer work on Android and iOS?
Mobile features differ by operating system, so do not assume that an Android feature is also available on iOS.
Android
Aspyr’s Android FAQ says the Android version supports local multiplayer for up to four players, Hot Seat for up to six players sharing one device, and Play by Cloud. The same FAQ says online multiplayer is unavailable on mobile. It also notes that Android and iOS local multiplayer is unavailable when the versions are out of sync. These player limits and features are specific to the Android FAQ, not a universal limit for every edition.

iOS
Aspyr’s iOS FAQ describes multiplayer as LAN only and says an iOS player cannot currently play multiplayer against a PC or Mac player. Check that support page for current availability before arranging a game.
What about DLC and different editions?
DLC can affect whether someone joins a friend’s game. Aspyr says the New Frontier Pass Multiplayer Compatibility Pack is a free download that lets players who do not own the New Frontier Pass join games hosted by pass owners; the pass owner can use New Frontier Pass content in those games. This addresses that specific situation, not every DLC or edition mismatch.

Before starting, agree on the DLC the group wants to use and check whether a compatibility pack is needed. Do not assume the pack makes all combinations of add-ons compatible.

One store-specific figure should not be generalized: the Xbox store listing describes online multiplayer for 2–8 players for the listed Xbox edition. Check the current Xbox listing for that edition’s current details; it does not establish a limit for other platforms.
