Paradox confirms that 1.4 adds betrothals and inheritance contracts; check the current in-game tooltips before assuming who can marry, whether another country will accept, or what a marriage will do.
What royal marriage means in EU5
EU5 treats dynastic diplomacy as part of a broader character system. A royal marriage is therefore best understood as a relationship between dynasties, not as a button that by itself promises a throne claim or personal union. Paradox’s 1.4 announcement confirms new dynastic features, but does not publish a complete rulebook for ordinary royal marriages.

What changes in update 1.4
Paradox’s 1.4 Rio Salado update announcement lists two additions under Politics & Diplomacy:
- Betrothals: a newly named way to arrange dynastic ties.
- Inheritance Contracts: a newly named way to secure a dynasty’s future.
Paradox presents both as improvements to dynastic gameplay. The announcement does not explain their precise timing, eligibility requirements, or outcomes, so use the descriptions and tooltips in your current game to establish what each agreement does before committing to it.

Does a royal marriage guarantee a personal union?
No such guarantee is established by the official 1.4 announcement. It confirms dynastic features, not a rule that an ordinary royal marriage automatically creates a personal union, creates a claim on another throne, or determines which heir inherits. Do not assume EU4’s rules carry over unchanged.
A secondary royal-marriage guide offers provisional orientation that character and diplomatic factors can affect eligibility and acceptance. It does not establish a universal acceptance formula or a guaranteed succession result. Treat the current game’s own offer details as authoritative for a specific diplomatic decision.

What to check before arranging a dynastic agreement
Because the official announcement does not document the full mechanics, inspect the current-build tooltips for the details that determine whether an agreement suits your situation:
- Timing: whether the option is a betrothal for a future marriage or an agreement available now.
- People involved: which characters are eligible and who will be joined by the arrangement.
- Diplomatic terms: whether the other country accepts and what factors the game shows for its decision.
- Stated outcome: what the agreement explicitly changes; do not infer a union or succession result unless the game says so.
- Succession law: whether the relevant laws affect the later fate of a dynastic relationship. A secondary dynasty reference raises this point, but the official announcement does not confirm its precise effect.
Why the version matters
Paradox announced that update 1.4 entered open beta on October 1, 2026, with feedback intended to identify bugs and balance issues ahead of the stated October 28 release date. As of October 8, 2026, the new diplomacy details are beta information, not a settled description of every later build. Check the patch notes and in-game tooltips for the version you are playing.
