Several residents on one Animal Crossing: New Horizons island can play Happy Home Paradise, but each resident has separate DLC progress and a separate resort island. One resident’s purchase can enable the other players on the shared console to play with their own save data. Nintendo describes ways to tour and share designs, but its official feature pages do not document two players co-designing the same vacation home in real time.
Do you have to buy Happy Home Paradise for every player?
No, not when residents share a console and one resident purchases the DLC and loads it to that console. Nintendo says the other players on the island can then play using their own save data. This shared-console guidance should not be treated as a general entitlement across every console setup; the DLC owner’s access on another console is subject to Nintendo’s online-license conditions. Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise FAQ explains the shared-island case.

The other route is access through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. With an individual membership, only the Nintendo Account that holds the membership can play through that membership. A family membership covers accounts in the Nintendo Account family group, which Nintendo recommends when multiple players need membership access. Nintendo’s access guide also explains the membership requirements.
What happens to each resident’s progress?
Progress is separate for every player on the island, and residents sharing a console get their own resort islands. Nintendo says HHP save data is stored as part of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons save data, while DLC progress remains separate for each player. In practical terms, sharing access to the DLC does not mean sharing one vacation-home portfolio or one set of progress.

Can two players design one vacation home together?
Nintendo’s pages describe designing vacation homes, touring other players’ resort homes, and sharing designs through in-game photos. They do not state that players can edit one vacation home together in real time. The documented sharing features are for viewing or showing designs, not an advertised co-design mode. Nintendo’s HHP feature description outlines the showroom and photo-sharing features.
Do not confuse the base game’s multiplayer limits with a DLC collaboration limit. Nintendo lists up to four people on the same system and up to eight players online or through local wireless for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but those are base-game play figures—not a stated number of players who can design an HHP home together. Nintendo’s product listing gives those base-game figures.

Which access option fits your household?
| Access route | Who can play | Duration and internet |
|---|---|---|
| Separately purchased DLC loaded on a shared console | Nintendo says all users on the console where the purchased DLC is loaded can play. For residents sharing an island and console, one resident’s purchase can let all island players use their own save data. | Access to the purchased DLC is indefinite. Internet is not required to access purchased DLC content, though online features still require internet and Nintendo Switch Online. |
| Expansion Pack individual membership | The Nintendo Account with the active membership. | Access lasts while the membership is active, and an internet connection is required when launching the game. |
| Expansion Pack family membership | Accounts in the Nintendo Account family group. | Access lasts while the membership is active, and an internet connection is required when launching the game. |
If membership access ends and you have not purchased the DLC separately, access to the archipelago stops. Nintendo says the local save data remains available if membership resumes or the DLC is purchased. If choosing between routes, consider whose account needs access, whether the membership will stay active, which console has the DLC loaded or an online license, and whether internet is available when launching. Nintendo’s FAQ and access guide describe these conditions.
How do you start Happy Home Paradise?
The player must meet the in-game prerequisites before the airport offers work at the resort. Nintendo’s guide lists these requirements:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the resort and home-island economies shared?
No. The resort uses Poki and a separate catalog; Bells and Poki are not shared between the two settings, and catalog items do not simply carry over between them. HHP can unlock some content and features usable on the home island, but that does not make the resort and home-island catalogs or currencies one shared inventory. Nintendo’s FAQ describes the relationship between the DLC and the main island.
