Steamless is an open-source utility that removes supported SteamStub wrappers from Windows game executables so the files can be inspected with static-analysis tools. It targets one executable-protection layer—not every form of Steam DRM—and success depends on the SteamStub variant and file architecture.
What Steamless does
Steamworks describes its DRM as wrapping a game’s compiled executable and checking that it is running under an authenticated Steam instance. Steamless targets that SteamStub wrapper. The project describes its purpose as enabling static analysis of SteamStub-protected game files; it does not publish one universal unpacking algorithm for every variant. See the Steamless project README and the Steamworks DRM documentation.
In practical terms, Steamless identifies and processes a supported SteamStub format so the executable’s contents can be examined outside that wrapper. This is an unpacking operation, not a guarantee that the resulting file will launch, run without Steam, or have all protections removed.
How the unpacking process varies
Steamless includes separate unpackers for observed SteamStub variant families. The project’s release history records variant-specific fixes and handling for matters such as PE headers, code-section addresses, AES decryption, thread-local-storage callbacks, section alignment, and file checksums. These are examples of file-format and executable-structure details the tool may need to handle; they are not a single checklist applied identically to every file. See the Steamless release history.

The project’s variant labels reflect changes observed in submitted samples, rather than formal version numbers assigned by Valve. A file’s compatibility therefore cannot be inferred from the game’s release date or from a claim that it uses Steam DRM alone.
Which SteamStub variants are listed as supported?
The Steamless README lists support by observed variant, architecture, and—in some cases—variant version. Its Variant 1 support is 32-bit, with the README warning that it had been tested on only one file. The listed Variant 2 and Variant 3 combinations are:
Rank #2
| Observed variant | Listed versions | Listed architecture | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Variant 1 | Not stated | 32-bit | The README says support had been tested on only one file. |
| Variant 2 | 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 | 32-bit | Version labels are observational, not formal upstream versions. |
| Variant 3 | 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.1.0, and 3.1.2 | 32-bit and 64-bit | Version labels are observational, not formal upstream versions. |
These are the combinations the project lists, not a promise that every executable matching a label will unpack. The maintainers note they cannot test every game. Check the current project README and release history for the latest compatibility information.
What Steamless does not remove
Steamless draws a boundary around SteamStub. It does not remove a game’s Steamworks API integration, handle Valve’s CEG protection used by some older games, or claim to bypass anti-cheat systems and other protections. A file described as “unpacked” may still rely on Steam services or retain other technical protections. Consequently, Steamless should not be treated as a way to make a game playable without Steam or to remove all DRM.

How users control the output
Steamless provides a graphical interface and a command-line version. The release notes document command-line switches for retaining the .bind section or DOS stub, dumping the stub payload or SteamDRMP.dll, realigning sections, recalculating the PE checksum, and enabling experimental features. These options affect what is retained or emitted and how the resulting PE file is laid out; they do not expand the tool’s stated protection scope.
Section alignment and checksum handling can matter to the structure of the output file. Release notes also record fixes to AES decryption behavior that could otherwise leave junk data or corrupt output. Use the options documented for the particular release, and treat experimental features as experimental rather than a compatibility guarantee.

How to judge whether a file is a fit
- Identify the target layer: Steamless is relevant when the executable uses a supported SteamStub variant, not merely because the game is distributed on Steam.
- Check architecture and variant: Compare the file’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture and observed SteamStub variant/version with the project’s listed support.
- Account for other protections: Steamworks API integration, CEG, anti-cheat, or other protections may remain after SteamStub processing.
- Keep expectations narrow: Support lists and release notes do not establish that a specific game file has been tested or will unpack successfully.
