Sweeping Edge is a sword enchantment in Minecraft: Java Edition that increases the damage a sword sweep deals to nearby secondary targets. It does not increase the direct hit on the mob you attack. Mojang describes the effect as “Increases sweeping attack damage,” lists a maximum level of III, and marks the enchantment as Java Edition only.
What Sweeping Edge changes
A sword can perform a sweep without the enchantment. Sweeping Edge increases the sweep damage dealt to other targets caught by that attack; it does not create the sweep or strengthen the sword’s ordinary hit against the directly attacked target. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21 release notes describe PLAYER.SWEEPING_DAMAGE_RATIO as the amount of base attack damage transferred to secondary targets, reflecting this distinction.

When a sword sweep happens
According to the Minecraft Wiki’s Java Edition combat reference, a sweep requires the player to be grounded and the attack recharge to be at least 84.8%. The player must also be standing still or moving slower than sprint speed in a straight line. A sweep can affect nearby targets around the mob struck directly. These are version-sensitive Java mechanics; the Wiki reference is community-maintained, so behavior may differ if a later game update changes combat.
How much damage each level adds
The Minecraft Wiki gives the secondary-target sweep damage as a share of attack damage after Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods have been applied. Its listed percentages are approximate where indicated:

| Enchantment level | Secondary-target sweep damage |
|---|---|
| I | 50% of attack damage |
| II | Approximately 67% of attack damage |
| III | 75% of attack damage |
The cited reference gives the calculation as 1 + Attack_Damage × (Sweeping_Edge_Level / (Sweeping_Edge_Level + 1)), rounded to the nearest integer. Here, Attack_Damage means the sword’s damage after the effects of Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods. The formula applies to targets hit by the sweep, not the mob hit directly.
Is Sweeping Edge available in Bedrock Edition?
No. Mojang’s enchantment listing identifies Sweeping Edge as Java Edition only. Bedrock players should not expect to find it as a normal sword enchantment or use it as a way to increase sword-sweep damage.

How to get Sweeping Edge
The Minecraft Wiki lists an enchanting table and applying an enchanted book with an anvil as ways to obtain the enchantment. Microsoft’s general enchantment documentation also describes enchanting tables, librarian villagers, and using an anvil with an enchanted book or another item. Exact book, villager, and loot availability can vary by version and edition, so check the rules for the game version you play before relying on a particular route.
