A farmer is a villager whose profession is assigned by a composter. With access to planted farmland, the villager can harvest and replant crops; it can also offer farmer trades and share gathered food with other villagers. Farming crops, trading, and helping feed a breeder are related uses of the farmer, but they are not the same mechanic.

How a villager becomes a farmer

An eligible villager can take the farmer profession by claiming a composter as its job-site block. Mojang’s Village & Pillage release notes, dated April 23, 2019, describe villagers taking professions near job-site blocks and visiting those sites during the day. These notes document the introduced mechanics, not every current detail across Java and Bedrock.

If a villager will not become a farmer, check whether it can claim the intended composter and whether another nearby villager or workstation is affecting the assignment. A villager that has already been traded with has its profession and trade choices locked, so replacing the composter will not turn it into a different profession.

What a farmer does with crops

Given access to a workable field with planted crops, a farmer can harvest mature crops and replant them. This makes farmers useful in some villager-based crop farms. In common designs, a farmer works in a field while another villager receives food thrown by the farmer; hoppers or hopper minecarts can collect the dropped crops.

Field access and layout matter: paths, village boundaries, and the way drops are intercepted can affect whether a design works. The Minecraft Wiki crop-farming tutorial describes designs for beetroot, carrots, and potatoes, but does not establish that every design works identically in Java and Bedrock. Check instructions against your edition and game version before copying a specific build.

How farmer trades and restocking work

A farmer is also a trading villager. Trading earns villager experience and unlocks higher trade levels. If trades are exhausted, the villager needs to return to its job site to replenish them; Mojang’s 2019 release notes describe job-site visits and trade replenishment.

A crop field is not required for a farmer to have trades. Before the villager’s first trade, breaking and replacing its job block can cycle its novice offer, according to the Minecraft Wiki trading tutorial. After a trade has been completed, the villager’s profession and trade choices are locked. Specific offers can change with game version.

How farmers can help feed villagers

A farmer can collect food from nearby crops and share surplus with other villagers. That can help supply a villager breeder, but the farmer alone does not produce a baby villager: the other villagers need enough food, and the setup needs suitable beds. The villager-farming guide describes using a farmer as a food source in breeder setups.

Troubleshooting a farmer villager

  • The villager did not become a farmer: Make sure it is eligible to take a profession and can claim the composter. If you have already traded with it, its profession is locked.
  • The farmer is not tending crops: Check that crops are planted and the villager can reach the field. Recheck pathing and the layout for your edition and version.
  • The farmer’s trades are exhausted: Ensure the villager can reach and work at its linked job site so it can replenish trades.
  • The breeder is not producing babies: Confirm that villagers have enough food and that suitable beds are available; a farmer by itself is not sufficient.

What to check before using an automatic farm design

There is no single universally best farmer setup established by the available guidance. Before building, match the instructions to your game edition and version, crop type, collection method, and goal. A design for manual harvesting may not suit automatic collection, and a breeder setup has additional food and bed requirements.
