The companion restriction is checked when you reveal Umori as your companion; the discount does nothing until Umori is on the battlefield.
What does Umori do?
Umori is a legendary creature with the companion ability. Its official card text reads: “As Umori, the Collector enters the battlefield, choose a card type. Spells you cast of the chosen type cost {1} less to cast.” (Wizards of the Coast’s Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and Commander (2020 Edition) Release Notes.)
The card type you name for the discount is chosen as Umori enters the battlefield. It is separate from the type used to satisfy the companion condition: the deck does not have to contain only the type you later choose for the discount.
What is Umori’s companion deck restriction?
To reveal Umori as your companion, every nonland card in your starting deck must share at least one card type. Lands do not count. Cards can have additional types, so an artifact creature and an enchantment creature can both qualify through their shared creature type. The release notes clarify that this check is about a shared type, not cards having only that type. (Wizards of the Coast.)

- At MTG Decks & More we have a combined 50+ years experience building and playing decks from standard to modern to commander (and more!) at both a competitive nd casual level. We build powerful, fun decks. For sale is a 60 card custom Magic the Gathering simic (green/blue) ELITE mutate deck.
- This is a very powerful deck that takes advantage of the new mutate mechanic to generate tons of value and build huge creatures to overwhelm your opponent. The deck features Umori, the Collector as your companion, who helps you cast all your mutate creatures faster.
- It then adds 4 copies each of Pollywog Symbiote, Essence Symbiote, and Paradise Druid as mutate targets with strong synergies. The deck then adds a number of strong mutate creatures including Illuna, Apex of Wishes, Gemrazer, Auspicious Starrix, Parcelbeast, Trumpeting Gnarr, and many more!
- As you mutate creatures on top of one another, you will generate a ton of value by creating creature tokens, summoning creatures for free, tapping down your opponent's creatures, fetching lands, bouncing opposing creatures, etc. This deck can generate an unbelievable amount of value, filling your board with threats and eventually overwhelming the opponent.
- Modern legal and ready to play!
How does the restriction apply in Commander?
The commander is part of the starting deck for this check. It must share at least one card type with every other nonland card in the deck for Umori to qualify as companion. A deck can still use Umori as its commander instead, but that is a different role and does not make Umori a companion.
How do you get Umori from companion into play?
A companion begins outside the starting deck. Under the procedure described in Wizards’ release notes, you may pay {3} at sorcery timing to move Umori from outside the game to your hand. You then cast it normally. Its cost-reduction ability applies only while Umori is on the battlefield, not while it is outside the game or in your hand. (Wizards of the Coast’s release notes.)

How does Umori’s cost reduction work?
When Umori enters, choose a card type, such as creature or artifact. While Umori remains on the battlefield, spells you cast of that type cost {1} less to cast. The reduction lowers the total cost you pay; it does not change the spell’s mana cost or mana value. It removes generic mana only, so it cannot pay a colored mana symbol. (Wizards of the Coast’s March of the Machine Release Notes.)
Cost examples and interactions
- If a spell of the chosen type costs {2}{G}, Umori reduces the generic portion by {1}, leaving {1}{G} to pay.
- If the spell costs only colored mana, such as {G}{G}, the reduction cannot remove either colored requirement.
- Cost increases are applied before cost reductions. Umori can reduce generic mana in alternative costs, including flashback costs.
- For a spell with {X} in its cost, choose X before calculating the total cost and applying reductions.
Should you use Umori as a companion or commander?
The companion route requires every nonland card in the starting deck, including the commander in Commander, to share a card type, and it requires paying {3} at sorcery timing to move Umori to hand before casting. Using Umori as commander avoids that companion restriction and access payment, but Umori still has to be cast and its discount only functions once it is on the battlefield. A Commander’s Herald deck-building article discusses a particular Umori commander build and describes paying seven mana across accessing and casting Umori as a practical consideration; that is the author’s assessment of that build, not an official rule or a universal evaluation. (Commander’s Herald, “Oops All Instants” with Umori, the Collector – Plot Twist #27, January 10, 2025.)
