How Does Video Game Music Affect the Brain?

Game music can affect tension and emotional experience, but studies do not establish a universal effect on focus or memory.

Video game music can shape how tense, energized, or emotionally involved you feel while playing, and music-related emotion is associated with activity across several brain systems. But evidence that game music reliably improves focus or memory—or harms either—is limited. The effect depends on the music, the game, the task, and the listener.

What happens in the brain when game music plays?

Music-evoked emotion is associated with activity across brain regions involved in emotion, reward, memory, bodily regulation, and salience. A review by neuroscientist Stefan Koelsch identifies the amygdala, nucleus accumbens, hypothalamus, hippocampus, insula, cingulate cortex, and orbitofrontal cortex among the areas whose activity can be modulated during music-evoked emotion (Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 2014).

This broader music-neuroscience evidence offers a plausible explanation for why a soundtrack can make gameplay feel more urgent or emotionally charged. It does not establish that every game cue activates all these regions, or that a specific brain response will be the same for every player. Research focused specifically on music and sound in games has been described as sparse but growing (Oxford University Press, 2013).

Can game music make you feel more stressed?

It can influence tension and physiological arousal, but the available findings do not show that all game music causes stress or psychological harm. Different studies measured different outcomes, which should not be treated as interchangeable.

Built-in music compared with silence

In a 2005 experiment, participants played a video game for 10 minutes either with its built-in music or in silence. Saliva was sampled after practice, immediately after play, and 15 and 30 minutes later. The music group had significantly higher cortisol at the 15-minute post-play measurement. This is one study’s result for a particular game and audio condition, not evidence of a universal effect (Life Sciences, 2005).

Powerful music compared with peaceful music

A 2024 experiment found that powerful music increased players’ reported tension compared with peaceful music without reducing enjoyment. The authors also reported behavior changes, including less time taken per level. Their experiment used one powerful and one peaceful piece in a simple game, so the result needs testing with other music and games (IEEE conference paper, 2024).

Does background music help you focus while gaming?

There is not enough evidence to say that video game music reliably improves concentration. A 2024 systematic review examined 31 studies of music and other auditory stimulation—including ambient noise, white noise, and binaural beats—in relation to physiological measures and cognitive performance. It found results mixed or insufficient for firm conclusions; arousal and cognition were often measured separately, limiting causal claims (International Journal of Psychophysiology, 2024).

That review covers auditory stimulation broadly, not video game music alone. It therefore cannot settle whether a particular soundtrack helps a particular player focus during a particular game.

Does video game music affect memory?

A 2019 study is sometimes relevant to this question, but it tested the short-term effects of playing a game before a memory task—not the effect of music within the game. Its final sample was 24 healthy German-speaking adults aged 19–33. In a within-participant comparison, they rested, listened to Mozart, or played Angry Birds for 8 minutes 30 seconds before completing an n-back working-memory task.

Higher heart rate during the gaming break and lower reported relaxation after gaming were associated with poorer subsequent task performance compared with the music-listening condition. The study also reported reduced supplementary motor area activity after gaming versus music listening. Because its comparison was gaming against music listening or rest, it cannot show that in-game music caused the differences (Frontiers in Psychology, 2019).

How to interpret the evidence

“The brain” does not respond to game music in one simple, uniform way. A soundtrack can affect felt emotion, while a study may separately measure cortisol, heart rate, brain activation, or performance on a later task. Those measures describe different things: a change in a physiological signal does not by itself prove distress, and a change in a task score does not identify which part of gameplay caused it.

  • Music quality matters: the 2024 game experiment compared powerful and peaceful pieces, not every genre or soundtrack.
  • The audio comparison matters: the 2005 stress study compared built-in music with silence.
  • The activity matters: the 2019 memory study examined active gaming as a break before a later task, rather than music during gameplay.
  • The outcome matters: subjective tension, relaxation, cortisol, heart rate, brain activation, and working-memory performance are distinct outcomes.

Overall, game music can shape emotional experience and the felt intensity of play. Current evidence does not justify a blanket claim that it either helps or harms the brain’s attention and memory systems.
