Dragon Age: The Veilguard gives Rook a choice of Warrior, Rogue, or Mage, then builds variety through a branching skill tree, class specializations, and changeable ability loadouts. You are not locked into one narrow build: EA says you can swap abilities outside combat and respec individual nodes or the full tree.
How the class system works
Rook chooses one of three classes. EA describes them as broad combat identities rather than a ranking of which class is best. Your preference for weapons, range, and specialization theme is a more useful starting point than trying to identify an objectively strongest option; EA’s published descriptions do not establish class balance or a best build.
| Class | EA’s stated identity | A useful choice question |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Fights with a sword and shield or a two-handed weapon, with an emphasis on battlefield control. | Do you want to fight up close with a weapon, and which specialization theme appeals to you? |
| Mage | Uses spells to incinerate, freeze, electrocute, or crush enemies, from range or at close quarters. | Do you prefer casting from a distance or a closer spell-focused approach such as Spellblade? |
| Rogue | Relies on quick movement and reflexes, using a bow or dual swords for precise strikes. | Would you rather attack at range with a bow or move in with dual swords? |
These are broad descriptions, not exhaustive lists of every way to play a class. EA’s launch guide illustrates the range with sample builds: Mage Spellblade, Rogue Duelist, and Warrior Champion. It names Meteor, A Thousand Cuts, and Whirlwind as example abilities for those respective builds. EA’s launch guide and its class overview are the sources for these descriptions and examples.
How Skill Points and the Constellation Skill Tree work
Rook earns experience through quests, combat, and exploration. In Journal #7’s progression information, as reproduced by an EA staff account, quests—especially major ones—and companion bonds are highlighted as strong ways to progress. Each level-up grants a Skill Point to spend in the Constellation Skill Tree. The same progression information states a maximum level of 50; that figure is attributed to the reproduced Journal #7 information, not to independent gameplay testing. EA Forums’ reproduction of Journal #7 describes the progression and node system.
#1 Best Overall
The tree is more than a menu of active attacks. Its node shapes indicate different functions:
- Large circles: class skills and weapon proficiencies.
- Diamonds: abilities that can be assigned to an ability slot.
- Medium circles: major passives or ability upgrades.
- Small hexagons: traits that modify an existing class skill.
- Small circles: minor passives or stat boosts.
This mix lets points develop both what Rook can actively do and the supporting traits and bonuses around those actions.

What specializations add—and whether faction locks them
Each class has three specialization areas that unlock themed abilities. Journal #7’s progression information, as reproduced by an EA staff account, says the areas are associated with factions thematically, but the faction Rook belongs to does not restrict the choice. Its example is a Grey Warden Rogue taking the Veil Ranger specialization. In other words, faction affiliation can give a specialization context without making it unavailable to Rook.
How to choose a class without treating it as permanent
Start with the combat style you want to use most, then consider the specialization themes and sample builds as ways to shape that class. Warrior, Mage, and Rogue set different starting identities, but the tree offers active abilities, upgrades, traits, and passives within the class. The available EA descriptions support comparing play-style preferences; they do not support claims that one class is stronger or more versatile in every situation.

EA Creative Director John Epler described the broader design goal in the August 15, 2024 release announcement: “We wanted to give you the choice to really express yourself, and do that in a world full of adventure and danger.” The remark is about player choice generally, rather than a specific explanation of skill-tree mechanics. EA’s release announcement attributes the quotation to Epler.
