Each expedition runs across three in-game days: explore Limveld during the first two, survive a boss at the end of each night, then face a Nightlord on day three. Night’s Tide shrinks the safe area as time passes, so choosing where to go and what to prioritize is part of the challenge.
What you do during an expedition
Bandai Namco describes Nightreign as a reworking of the series’ core design around structured expeditions. Rather than setting out on one long journey, you repeatedly enter Limveld, prepare under a time limit, and try to reach the expedition’s final target.

- Choose an expedition and a Nightfarer. Nightfarers have distinct skills and characteristics that shape how they play.
- Explore Limveld during the day. Find loot, defeat lesser enemies, and visit Sites of Grace to level up. The available preparation time is limited.
- Adjust to Night’s Tide. As night approaches, the playable area contracts, pressing the group toward the required encounter. That makes route choices and preparation important: time spent in one place is time not spent elsewhere.
- Fight the night boss. The first two nights each end with a mandatory boss encounter.
- Reach the Nightlord. On the third day, the expedition culminates in a showdown with the chosen Nightlord avatar.
The result is a loop of scouting, collecting, leveling, and fighting, compressed into a single run. A particular expedition’s preparation is temporary, but some progression carries forward between attempts.
What carries over between attempts
Relics provide persistent preparation: Bandai Namco’s gameplay guide says they take effect at the beginning of an expedition and are not consumed when you return from the Lands Between. Keep that separate from the character level and equipment gathered during the run, which are part of that expedition’s preparation rather than the relic system.

How Nightfarers and weapons work
Nightfarer choice is about abilities and play style, not a simple weapon-class lock. The official game page says every Nightfarer can use every type of weapon. The official starter guide recommends trying skills in the Sparring Grounds and seeing how different equipment suits your character; you can learn the character’s abilities while adapting to the gear you find in Limveld.
Can you play solo, duo, or with three players?
The official starter guide describes solo play as available online or offline, while cooperative multiplayer requires an internet connection. The default co-op arrangement is three players, and Bandai Namco also documents Duo Expeditions for two-player co-op. Multiplayer expeditions cannot be started offline.

Deep of Night is a high-difficulty expedition mode with a rating system. Bandai Namco Europe says defeating Nightlord targets raises the rating, while failures lower it. In multiplayer, quitting or disconnecting during a session also lowers the rating. These rating consequences apply to Deep of Night; they should not be assumed to govern every standard expedition.
