The visible link in an email and the header-based one-click mechanism used by Gmail are related, but they are not the same thing. Which rules apply depends on the message, the recipient’s email provider, and—when considering the law—the relevant jurisdiction.
What an unsubscribe link changes
A mailing list is a group of recipients who receive messages under a particular subscription or list identity. A newsletter, promotional update, or other recurring subscription message may belong to one list even when the organization sends several different kinds of email. For example, a game publisher might have separate subscriptions for a general newsletter and event announcements. That example describes a possible way to organize lists, not a rule about how every publisher operates.

When you unsubscribe, the sender should stop sending the messages covered by that request. The exact scope depends on the route you use. A link may opt you out of the list associated with the email, or it may open a preference page where you can change multiple subscriptions. A request tied to one newsletter should not be assumed to remove you from every list the sender operates.

Transaction receipts, password resets, and one-time passcodes serve different purposes from newsletters. Google’s sender guidance treats those as examples of transactional messages rather than subscription messages. Their continued arrival does not, by itself, show that an unsubscribe from a marketing list failed. Google describes the categories in its Email sender guidelines FAQ.

What happens when you click the visible link
The link printed in the body of an email is the route a person can see and select. It may submit an opt-out request directly, or take the person to a page for managing preferences. A direct opt-out should make the consequence clear; a preference page can give the recipient more control if the sender offers several lists.
The number of steps matters. A route that asks you to sign in, answer unrelated questions, or navigate several screens before accepting the request is less straightforward than a direct confirmation. Under U.S. CAN-SPAM rules for covered commercial email, a sender cannot make honoring the opt-out conditional on a fee or on providing personally identifying information beyond an email address. The sender also cannot use spam filtering to block opt-out requests. The FTC summarizes these requirements in its CAN-SPAM compliance guide.
A confirmation screen or message can help show that the request was received, but it is not the same as a completed change to every subscription. Check what the page says: it may confirm removal from the current list, offer a broader set of preferences, or ask you to choose which subscriptions to keep. Do not infer that all future email will stop unless the confirmation says that is the scope you selected.

Some email clients can display an unsubscribe control near the sender information, separately from the link in the message body. For Google’s qualifying one-click mechanism, senders use message headers: a List-Unsubscribe header containing an HTTPS URL, together with List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click. This lets a recipient trigger an unsubscribe from the mail interface without first finding and selecting a link in the body.

A body link alone is not the header-based mechanism Google requires for qualifying messages. Conversely, a header-based option does not prevent a sender from also including a visible body link or a preferences page. The two routes can coexist: the header supports the provider’s one-click action, while the body link can provide a familiar route or more detailed choices.
Google describes the header action as removing the person from the list associated with the message, not automatically from every list run by the sender. If a sender wants recipients to select broader preferences, it can offer that separately. Google’s Email subscription guidelines for senders explain the subscription-message and one-click expectations. The practical design question is therefore not merely whether an email has an unsubscribe link, but whether the scope of each route is clear and the applicable provider mechanism is present.
Which emails count as subscription or commercial messages?
Not every email from a company has the same purpose. Google’s guidance uses newsletters and marketing messages as subscription-message examples, while password resets, purchase receipts, and one-time passwords are examples of transactional messages. Some notifications may also qualify as subscription messages. These categories describe Google’s guidance; they should not be treated as a universal legal classification.
For U.S. CAN-SPAM, the FTC says the primary purpose of a message determines whether the law’s commercial-email provisions apply. Its narrow transactional or relationship categories include messages that facilitate an agreed transaction, deliver goods or services already agreed to, provide certain warranty or safety information, or notify a customer about changes to an ongoing relationship. An account, membership, or past purchase does not automatically make every promotional email transactional.

A mixed message can be difficult to classify. Promotional material alongside an account update does not necessarily make the email transactional: the subject line and the placement of content can matter to its primary purpose. The FTC explains the categories and primary-purpose test in its CAN-SPAM Rule. When an email includes both service information and promotion, judging it solely by the presence of an account or transaction is not enough.
U.S. legal requirements and Gmail requirements are separate
The FTC’s CAN-SPAM guidance applies to covered commercial email in the United States. Google’s sender requirements describe a separate provider-specific layer for delivery to personal Gmail accounts. Neither set of rules should be presented as a worldwide standard, and a Gmail threshold is not the same thing as a statutory deadline.
| Requirement or timing | What it applies to | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| 10 business days | Time to honor an opt-out request for covered commercial email. | FTC summary of U.S. CAN-SPAM in its compliance guide. |
| At least 30 days after sending | Minimum period during which the offered opt-out mechanism must remain able to process a request. | FTC summary of U.S. CAN-SPAM in its compliance guide. |
| More than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts | Google’s threshold for requiring one-click unsubscribe support for relevant marketing and subscribed messages. | Google’s Email subscription guidelines; this is not the FTC opt-out deadline. |
| 48 hours | Google’s stated timeframe for fulfilling unsubscribe requests. | Google’s Email subscription guidelines; this is provider guidance, not the CAN-SPAM statutory period. |
The Gmail one-click threshold concerns messages sent to Gmail accounts and the relevant marketing or subscribed messages; Google excludes transactional messages from that one-click requirement. It is not a rule that every sender in every country must implement the same headers. Other jurisdictions and providers may set different obligations; the sources cited here do not establish a complete comparison of them.
The FTC says covered commercial messages must provide a clear and conspicuous explanation of how to opt out. Its guide states: “Your message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how the recipient can opt out of getting marketing email from you in the future.” This does not mean every operational message must carry a marketing unsubscribe link: whether the commercial provisions apply turns on the message’s primary purpose and the relevant legal category.

How list operators should make unsubscribing work
For organizations sending newsletters or other subscription messages, a reliable process starts with understandable list boundaries. Google recommends sending to people who want the messages, confirming addresses, and identifying each subscription list with a human-readable List-id header or a distinct From address. Those practices help recipients and mail systems distinguish one kind of subscription from another.
- Define each subscription. Give each list a recognizable purpose, such as a newsletter or event announcements, rather than treating every kind of email as one indistinguishable subscription.
- Confirm the address after signup. Google recommends confirming an address after someone subscribes (double consent). This helps ensure that the address was entered intentionally and that the person can receive the messages.
- Separate subscription mail from transactional mail. Google recommends using different addresses for these message types. This can make the sender identity and the recipient’s expectations clearer.
- Identify the list in the message. Use a human-readable list identity or a distinct From address, as Google recommends, so the subscription behind the message is easier to recognize.
- Implement the applicable unsubscribe routes. For Gmail messages subject to Google’s one-click requirement, include the required headers; a body link on its own does not substitute for them. A body link can still lead to a preferences page if the sender offers wider controls.
- Process requests promptly and keep the scope consistent. Connect each route to the right list and apply the applicable processing timeframe. A request for one list should not accidentally leave that same subscription active because a separate preferences system failed to synchronize.
Google’s subscription guidance puts the one-click expectation plainly: “Correctly implement one-click unsubscribe for all subscription messages, in a way that no additional user action is needed to unsubscribe.” The FTC also says responsibility can rest with both the initiator and sender of commercial messages; outsourcing mail delivery does not, by itself, transfer away a sender’s legal responsibility. The FTC discusses mailing lists, listservs, and online groups in its answers to CAN-SPAM questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you still receive email after unsubscribing
First, compare the new message with the subscription you opted out of. A receipt, password reset, or one-time passcode may be a transactional message rather than the newsletter you removed yourself from. A different newsletter or notification may also be managed as a separate subscription.
- If it is the same newsletter: revisit the confirmation or preferences page, if available, and check whether it says the request was completed or merely submitted. Keep the confirmation for reference.
- If it is another subscription: use that message’s unsubscribe route or the sender’s preferences page to manage that list, rather than assuming the first request covered all lists.
- If the opt-out route is unclear or blocked: the FTC’s U.S. guidance requires a clear opt-out explanation for covered commercial messages and says senders must not block requests through spam filtering. The applicable legal remedy can depend on the facts and jurisdiction.
- If a sender continues promotional messages after a request: distinguish the message’s purpose and the date of the request before deciding whether a legal deadline has passed. The FTC’s timeline applies to covered U.S. commercial email, not all mail everywhere.
These checks help separate a failed list-level opt-out from an email that belongs to another category or subscription. They also avoid treating a single sender identity as proof that every message shares the same list or legal status.

How to judge whether an unsubscribe experience is clear
A sound experience makes three things apparent: which messages the request affects, what action the recipient must take, and whether the change is complete. A one-click control is useful when someone wants to leave the list attached to the current message; a preference center is useful when the person wants to keep some lists and stop others. Those routes serve different choices, so one should not be disguised as the other.
For senders, the corresponding checks are operational: can the system map a message back to its subscription, process the request at the proper list level, and keep transactional mail separate from marketing subscriptions? Does the body route work as described, and do qualifying Gmail messages contain the header-based mechanism? A visible link can be present while the provider-specific one-click implementation is absent, which is why checking both routes matters.
The central idea is scope. An unsubscribe is not a universal command to erase every relationship between a person and an organization; it is an instruction tied to a message and its subscription context. Clear list identities and working request handling make that boundary understandable to recipients.
