There is no single minimum distance that guarantees two Nether portals will link separately. Minecraft converts the source portal’s horizontal coordinates by a factor of eight, searches around that converted destination, and uses the closest portal it finds. To avoid a wrong link, align each pair by coordinates and account for other portals, vertical distance, edition, and version.
How portal linking works
When you enter a portal, Minecraft converts its X and Z coordinates for the other dimension: divide by eight when going from the Overworld to the Nether, and multiply by eight when going from the Nether to the Overworld. Y is not scaled. The game then searches near the converted destination for an existing portal and selects the closest candidate it finds, measuring distance in three dimensions. That means the portal’s location relative to the converted target matters more than its raw distance from the portal you entered. A portal that looks farther away on a map can win if it is closer to the target in 3D, while a portal at a different height can affect the result.
What the commonly quoted 128- and 16-block ranges mean
The often-repeated figures describe the destination search bounds around the converted coordinates—not a universal minimum spacing between portal frames. The cited mechanics reference reports these ranges:

These are reported portal-search bounds, not a guarantee that portals at any particular separation will behave as intended. How to set up a deliberate portal pair
- Record the source portal’s coordinates. Note X, Y, and Z at the portal you enter.
- Convert X and Z. For Overworld-to-Nether travel, divide X and Z by eight. For Nether-to-Overworld travel, multiply them by eight. Keep Y unchanged. In Java, negative fractional coordinates round down to the next lower integer.
- Place the destination portal near the converted target. Match X and Z as closely as practical, and choose a sensible Y alignment because vertical distance contributes to the comparison.
- Check for competing portals. Look for other active portals in the destination search area. If more than one candidate is found, the closest in straight-line 3D distance is selected.
- Correct terrain-driven placement if needed. If the target is obstructed or unsuitable, the game may create a portal at a nearby viable location. How to stop a portal linking to the wrong one
Start by comparing each destination portal with the source portal’s converted X/Z target, not just by measuring the gap between frames. Then consider the Y difference and any other portals that could be candidates in the search region. If the wrong portal is closer to the converted target, move the intended portal nearer to it or move the competing portal farther away. Where terrain prevents an exact placement, adjust the pair and test the route in both directions; a generated portal may not sit exactly at the calculated target.

For a planned route, the most dependable practical approach is to build the Nether portal near the Overworld portal’s X/Z divided by eight, align heights sensibly, and keep competing portals outside the relevant search area or farther from the converted target in 3D. The exact spacing needed depends on edition and Java version, travel direction, height, nearby portals, and terrain.
