There is no universal portal-to-portal distance that guarantees two Nether portals will stay separate. Minecraft converts horizontal coordinates between the Overworld and Nether at a 1:8 ratio, then looks for an existing portal near the converted destination. To make two portals link as intended, place each counterpart near that coordinate-equivalent location—and account for your edition, version, height, and any nearby portals.
How portal distance and linking work
Portal travel is based on coordinates, not simply the straight-line distance between two portal frames. The game converts the portal’s X and Z coordinates between dimensions, then searches around the converted destination for a portal candidate. Y is not scaled, but vertical separation can affect which portal is closest.
- Traveling from the Overworld to the Nether: divide X and Z by 8.
- Traveling from the Nether to the Overworld: multiply X and Z by 8.
- Keep Y unchanged as the starting target; do not divide or multiply it.
For example, an Overworld portal at X=800, Z=−400 corresponds to approximately X=100, Z=−50 in the Nether. Negative coordinates require care: integer coordinate conversion uses floor behavior, so a negative value with a fractional result rounds down rather than toward zero. See the Minecraft Wiki’s portal mechanics reference for the conversion and linking details.
Why there is no single safe spacing
A spacing figure by itself cannot guarantee separate links. The converted target and the portals available near it both matter: an existing candidate may be chosen instead of the portal you expected, and a portal at a different height can influence which candidate is closest.

Java Edition changed its search distance in version 1.16.2. The Mojang bug-tracker record describes the dimension-scaled search as 16 blocks in the Nether versus 128 blocks in the Overworld, and says the change had not been ported to Bedrock Edition when the issue was documented. A secondary mechanics reference describes Bedrock and older Java as using a 128-block radius in both dimensions. These figures are useful context, not an edition-independent minimum spacing rule; check the behavior for your edition and version before relying on a hard cutoff. See also the portal mechanics reference.
Set up two portal pairs deliberately
- Record the first portal’s coordinates. Note X, Y, and Z in the dimension where it stands.
- Calculate its counterpart target. Divide X and Z by 8 for an Overworld-to-Nether target, or multiply them by 8 for a Nether-to-Overworld target. Leave Y unchanged as a starting point.
- Build the counterpart close to that target. Clear enough surrounding space for a portal and a safe arrival. A correctly aligned pair is more dependable than relying on distance alone.
- Repeat for the other destination. Convert its coordinates too, then inspect the proposed Nether sites and nearby portals before building. The converted Nether targets should be separated enough that they do not compete in the relevant search area.
- Test travel both ways. A destination portal can be generated away from its calculated target if that location is obstructed or unsuitable, which can make the return trip link unexpectedly.
If a portal connects to the wrong place
- Convert the source portal’s X and Z again and check for arithmetic or negative-coordinate rounding errors.
- Look for other portals near the converted target, including portals at substantially different Y coordinates.
- Check both dimensions. A generated portal displaced from its target can change which portal is selected on the return trip.
- Adjust or remove competing portals, then test the route again in both directions.
- Confirm whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and identify the game version before applying any search-radius figure.
What to use as your spacing rule
For Java 1.16.2 and later, 16 Nether blocks—equivalent to 128 Overworld blocks—can serve as a rough horizontal guide because it reflects the documented search-radius change. It is not a guaranteed safety boundary: alignment, candidate portals, height, and the exact edition and version can change the result. The practical rule is to calculate both destination targets, build near them, and check for competing portals rather than relying on a universal Overworld distance.
