There is no single “child lock” switch in Minecraft. If a child cannot join multiplayer or Realms, a parent usually needs to allow multiplayer in the child’s Microsoft/Xbox account settings. Chat, friends, clubs, and the console or device’s own parental controls are separate restrictions, so change only the permission your child needs.
First, identify what is blocked
“Child lock” can refer to different limits. The setting to change depends on what the child is trying to do:
- Join multiplayer games or Realms: check the Microsoft/Xbox multiplayer permission.
- Use text or voice chat, or receive invites: check communication permissions; multiplayer and communication are separate.
- Add or follow friends, or use clubs: check the relevant friend or club permissions.
- Open or play the game: check the platform’s age, purchase, or parental controls as well as the account settings.
Minecraft’s official parental-controls guide explains that Microsoft/Xbox settings can apply even when Minecraft is played on another device. The game may also be limited by built-in controls on the console or device.
Allow multiplayer on a child Microsoft account
A parent or guardian must make changes to a child account. Minecraft’s guide states, “Only parent accounts can modify settings.”
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Have the parent sign in at account.xbox.com/settings using the parent Microsoft account.
- Select the child’s gamertag or account.
- Open Online Safety and allow “You can join multiplayer games.”
- Change club or friend permissions only if the child also needs those features.
- Save or confirm the change if prompted, then reopen Minecraft and try the activity again.
The exact interface may vary. The key permission for joining multiplayer is “You can join multiplayer games”; enabling it does not mean you must allow unrestricted chat.
Keep chat restricted while allowing online play
Communication is controlled separately from multiplayer. In the child’s Xbox privacy settings, the option “Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites” can be set to Everyone, Friends, or Block. Choose the narrowest option that fits your family’s needs. For example, a parent can allow multiplayer while leaving communication at Friends or Block.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Friend management and clubs also have their own permissions. If the child’s problem is only chat, invitations, friends, or clubs, adjust that specific setting rather than opening every online feature. Minecraft’s guide to social features and child safety describes controls such as following friends, communication, community creations, and clubs. Minecraft also says its Bedrock profanity filter is on by default and cannot be turned off while signed in as a child account; it is not the same as the chat permission.
Check the console or device’s parental controls too
There are two control layers to consider. Minecraft says the more restrictive setting can determine what the child can do, so allowing a feature in the Microsoft account may not override a console or device restriction.

| Control layer | What it can restrict | When to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft/Xbox child account | Multiplayer, communication, friends, and clubs | When Minecraft account permissions block an online or social feature, including on a non-Xbox device. |
| Console or device account | Platform-specific multiplayer, privacy, age, or parental limits | When the game is played on a console or controlled device, or the Microsoft account already allows the feature. |
Minecraft points families to platform-specific controls for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, mobile, Windows, and Chromebook in its Bedrock Edition parental-controls guide. For PlayStation, see PlayStation’s privacy settings support page. The menus and steps differ by platform; do not assume an Xbox account change removes a separate device restriction.
Refresh Minecraft and troubleshoot a setting that still blocks access
After changing settings in the Xbox Family app
Minecraft’s instructions for the Xbox Family app say to sign out of Minecraft and restart it after changing the child’s settings. Then sign back in with the same child account and test the blocked feature.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
If multiplayer is still unavailable
- Confirm that the parent changed settings for the same child account and gamertag used in Minecraft.
- Check both the Microsoft/Xbox permission and the platform’s own parental controls.
- Read the exact error message and identify the platform and Minecraft edition. These details help distinguish an account restriction from a device restriction.
- Use the relevant official support route for that platform if both settings layers appear to allow access. The available official guidance does not establish one troubleshooting sequence that applies to every device and error.
Do not start by changing the child’s birth date or removing the family relationship. The official guidance does not identify either as a universal fix.

Minecraft’s parental-controls guide, published September 22, 2023, says Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, and Realms require an Xbox Live or Microsoft account, including when the player is not using an Xbox. It also says age classifications vary by location; the page names under 16 in the United States and European Union and under 19 in South Korea. Those thresholds are regional, not global rules.
