It depends on your Minecraft edition. In Java Edition, strongholds generate in rings around the world origin at X=0, Z=0; a current stronghold finder puts the first ring about 1,280–2,816 blocks from that point. In Bedrock Edition, strongholds are distributed randomly through the Overworld and are at least 160 blocks from the original world spawn. Neither figure gives the distance from your current position.
Stronghold distance by edition
| Edition | How strongholds generate | What the distance means |
|---|---|---|
| Java | In concentric rings around the world origin, X=0, Z=0. | The Minecraft Tools Wiki finder, labeled Java & Bedrock 26.3 and consulted in 2026, reports a first-ring range of 1,280–2,816 blocks from the origin. This is a third-party finder figure, not a radius stated in Minecraft’s official article. |
| Bedrock | Randomly throughout the Overworld. | Minecraft’s official article says they are at least 160 blocks from the original spawn point. That is a minimum, not a typical distance or a maximum. |
Java rings are not all the same distance
The first-ring range applies only to the first ring; it does not describe every Java stronghold. Minecraft’s official July 4, 2024 stronghold article lists three strongholds in the first ring, six in the second, ten in the third, and fifteen in the fourth. It says the pattern continues through an eighth ring, which has nine strongholds. The article does not give the rings’ radii, so the first-ring range should not be extended to later rings.
World spawn, origin, and your location are different reference points
The Java pattern is centered on the world origin, not necessarily the place where your character currently is. The Bedrock minimum is measured from original world spawn. To estimate how far you must travel from where you stand, you need your coordinates, the stronghold’s location, and the direction between them. Edition and, for a precise location, the world seed also matter.

- Make Eyes of Ender: combine an Ender pearl with blaze powder.

- Carry several: each use has a one-in-five chance of shattering the Eye.
- Prepare to activate the portal: the portal frame has 12 blocks to fill, and Minecraft’s official article says usually one or two are already filled.
