How Far Away Do You Have to Be for Mobs to Spawn in Minecraft?

Natural mob spawning generally requires at least 24 blocks of separation, but the outer range differs between Java and Bedrock and depends on Bedrock simulation distance.

For ordinary natural mob spawning in Minecraft, a player generally needs to be at least 24 blocks from the spawn location. The outer limit depends on edition and settings: Java Edition’s practical range is 128 blocks, while Bedrock’s range depends on simulation distance—about 44 blocks at simulation distance 4, according to the Minecraft Wiki mob-farm tutorial.

How far away can mobs spawn?

Think of natural spawning as a distance window, not a single radius. A spawn location generally must be more than 24 blocks from the player, and it must also fall within the game’s effective outer range. These figures concern ordinary natural spawning; spawners, raids, and scripted or add-on spawns may follow different rules.

Setup Practical outer distance in the cited sources What to check
Java Edition 128 blocks Keep spawnable locations beyond 24 blocks and within the practical range. The Minecraft Wiki’s mob-farm tutorial gives this figure; exact behavior can depend on version and setup.
Bedrock Edition, simulation distance 4 About 44 blocks Simulation distance affects where spawning is processed. Four chunks is the documented default; see Microsoft’s simulation-distance documentation.
Bedrock Edition, simulation distance above 4 Roughly 96 blocks for settings above 4, according to the Minecraft Wiki tutorial The available setting depends on device or server, and simulation distance still bounds processing.

The 24–128-block distance filter appears in Microsoft’s Bedrock spawn-rule documentation. It should not be read as a universal outer range for every Bedrock world: the practical radius is affected by simulation distance, and sources do not establish one exact distance for every mob, version, or server configuration.

Why Bedrock simulation distance changes the answer

Simulation distance determines how far from a player the game processes gameplay mechanics, including mob spawning. Microsoft documents four chunks as the default, with higher settings—up to twelve on some devices. The setting is not the same as render distance: seeing distant terrain does not mean the game is processing spawns there. Check the simulation-distance setting for the world or server you are playing on before planning a Bedrock farm.

How to place yourself relative to a mob farm

Distance is measured in three dimensions. If a farm’s platforms are well above or below your standing position, that vertical separation uses part of the available distance, leaving less horizontal room within the effective spawn region. The Minecraft Wiki mob-farm tutorial describes this as a spawnable-area calculation.

  1. Identify the edition and version you are playing. Do not apply Java’s 128-block practical radius to Bedrock.
  2. In Bedrock, check the world or server’s simulation-distance setting. Microsoft explains the setting and its effect on processing in its simulation-distance documentation.
  3. Measure from your player position to the spawnable platform, including vertical separation. Keep the platform beyond the 24-block minimum while placing it within the practical outer range for your setup.
  4. If the farm produces no mobs, check other spawn conditions too. Microsoft’s spawn-rule documentation and entity-spawning tutorial cover filters such as brightness, height, difficulty, biome, valid blocks, and density.

Why distance alone does not guarantee a spawn

Being inside the distance window only makes a location eligible with respect to distance. A mob may still fail to spawn if its other requirements are not met, including suitable light level, biome, height, difficulty, spawnable blocks, or available population capacity. The applicable conditions vary by mob and game edition; a general distance rule cannot replace a mob-specific guide.
