That is a setting limit, not a guarantee that a player’s tag will always show at exactly 64 blocks: the player must also be visible. Bedrock Edition has no universal name-tag distance in blocks documented in the official guide; visibility is constrained by the game’s render distance and the server’s view distance.
Java Edition: 64 blocks by default in version 26.2
Mojang’s Java Edition 26.2 release notes document the minecraft:name_tag_distance component. Its default is 64.0 blocks, and its configurable range is 0.0 to 512.0 blocks. Mojang describes it as controlling how far away an entity’s name tag is visible.
The setting does not override whether the entity itself is visible: the release notes specify, “The name cannot be visible if the entity is not visible.” So 64 blocks is the default tag-distance setting, not a promise of a visible tag at precisely that distance in every situation.
Bedrock Edition: visibility follows rendering limits
The official Bedrock render-distance guide does not give one fixed player-name-tag range in blocks. It explains that render distance determines which blocks, entities, and other objects are rendered. The available setting and its default vary by device, and a server’s view-distance can impose a lower limit; the effective range is constrained by whichever limit is lower.
#1 Best Overall
The guide lists render-distance values of 4–96 chunks, with device-dependent defaults and a typical Realms maximum of 20 chunks. These are general render-distance figures, not name-tag-specific distances, and should not be converted into a universal Bedrock tag range.
Don’t confuse a name tag with text below a player’s name
The name above a player and an optional scoreboard objective displayed below the name are different displays. A secondary scoreboard reference says the below-name text is hidden beyond around 10 blocks and while the player is sneaking. That approximate behavior does not describe the range of the name tag above the player.

Java team settings can hide tags
Java teams can control whether name tags are visible to team members and other players. The referenced scoreboard documentation lists always (the default), never, hideForOtherTeams, and hideForOwnTeam. These are visibility controls, not alternative default distance values; a hidden tag may therefore not appear even when the player is within the configured distance.
