How far can water be from farmland?
Count up to four blocks horizontally from the water source to the farmland. The game’s block-grid rule includes diagonal positions, so the reach forms a 9×9 square around a source at its center—not a circle measured by straight-line distance. The farthest corners of that square are within range.
The water must be at the same height as the farmland or one block higher. Blocks between the source and farmland do not prevent hydration, and either still or flowing water can work. These are the general mechanics described by Minecraft Wiki’s Farmland reference; the available material does not establish a version-by-version comparison for Java and Bedrock, so avoid assuming identical behavior in every mod, snapshot, or future version.
How many farmland blocks can one water source hydrate?
A source placed in the middle of a 9×9 plot can reach the 80 surrounding spaces: the 81-block square has one center block occupied by water. This is a block-layout count derived from the four-block rule, not a separately measured statistic. The layout is compact, though paths and harvesting access may mean leaving some spaces unplanted.

Centered 9×9 layout
Place water in the center, then arrange farmland up to four blocks out in every horizontal direction. For an irregular field, channels or additional sources can adapt irrigation to the shape; each source still needs to meet the reach and height conditions.

Water’s four-block reach applies to farmland hydration, not a separate direct crop-growth radius. The farmland beneath a crop is what needs to be hydrated for the growth benefit. Crops can grow on dry farmland, but hydrated farmland makes growth faster. Minecraft’s official Block of the Week: Farmland also describes hydrated farmland as visibly darker.
