In standard Minecraft Java Edition melee combat, a sword takes about 0.63 seconds to recharge for a fully charged attack, while a wooden or stone axe takes about 1.25 seconds. The interval is approximately 1 ÷ attack speed. These are Java mechanic examples, not a universal timing rule for every edition or weapon.
How to calculate the full-charge interval
For standard charge-based melee attacks in Java Edition, attack speed is the number of fully charged attacks possible per second. Divide 1 by the attack-speed value to estimate the time for one full recharge:
seconds per full charge ≈ 1 ÷ attack speed
A 1.6 attack-speed value works out to 0.625 seconds, usually rounded to about 0.63 seconds. A 0.8 value works out to 1.25 seconds. The Java Edition 1.9 mechanics reference lists a base attack speed of 4.0, equivalent to a 0.25-second refill; weapons modify that base value. (Java Edition 1.9 mechanics reference)

These figures are reference examples from the Java Edition 1.9-era mechanics documentation, not a guarantee for every newer custom item or specialized weapon. Check the item’s current attributes and behavior if you need an exact figure for a particular version or server.
Cooldown is not the same as clicking speed
The interval describes how long a standard Java melee attack takes to recharge for a full-charge strike. It does not set how quickly you can press the attack button, guarantee that an attack will hit, or mean that every press deals full damage. Attacking again before the cooldown finishes deals much less damage, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s beginner guide. Edition and weapon differences matter
These timings describe standard Java Edition charge-based melee mechanics; do not apply them as a player attack-speed table for Bedrock Edition. The beginner guide describes Java and Bedrock as having distinct combat systems. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation page for minecraft:attack_cooldown covers an entity AI cooldown for acquiring new attack targets, not a player’s melee weapon rate. Special weapons and custom items may also use different rules. Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 25w41a documents item components for minimum attack charge and specialized kinetic and piercing behavior, including spear-oriented examples. For those items, use the weapon-specific mechanics and the relevant game version rather than assuming the ordinary sword-and-axe interval applies. (Mojang’s Snapshot 25w41a notes)
