The formation graphic is only part of the tactic: check the in-game With Ball and Without Ball views to see how your instructions translate into actual shapes.
How formations, roles, and presets fit together
FC IQ is FC 26’s tactical and positional system. Its main pieces answer different questions: the formation establishes where the team is arranged, roles define players’ responsibilities and off-ball behavior, focuses adjust how they carry out those responsibilities, and a preset packages team instructions into a starting tactic. Treating these as separate layers makes it easier to understand why a team may not attack in the shape shown by its formation graphic.

| Element | What it determines | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Formation | The base arrangement and the positions and roles available to choose. EA says it determines how the team lines up to defend without the ball. | Does the defensive shape protect the areas you want covered? |
| Player role | A player’s primary responsibilities and off-ball behavior. | Does the player’s movement provide the support, width, or forward runs you need? |
| Focus | A modification to a role’s characteristics. | Does the selected version of the role emphasize the behavior you want? |
| Tactical preset | A ready-made team setup inspired by a football strategy. | Does it give you a useful starting point, and are its instructions compatible with your formation? |
The FC 25 FC IQ deep dive describes the central role idea as follows: “Player Roles guide how every player thinks, behaves, and moves off the ball.” The statement remains a useful way to understand the system, while FC 26’s notes document additions and changes to the available roles and focuses. Does a role change your formation?
A role does not replace the formation you selected. The formation remains the team’s base arrangement and determines the positions available. Roles and focuses then affect how individual players behave, especially in possession. That movement can make your attacking shape look different from the formation diagram, even though the underlying formation has not changed.

EA’s FC 25 explanation does not describe a separate, freely selected attacking formation. Instead, player behavior and movement produce the in-possession shape from the formation and instructions you set. In FC 26, use the With Ball and Without Ball squad views to inspect the distinction directly: one shows the team’s in-possession arrangement, while the other helps you assess its defensive shape. This is more informative than judging the tactic by the formation label alone.
When a shape does not look right, diagnose it in layers. First ask whether the defensive base is suitable. Then look at the With Ball view to see whether the selected roles create the spacing and support you expected. A formation can be a sound defensive choice while its role assignments produce an attack that feels too narrow, too stretched, or short of support. Adjust the layer that causes the problem rather than assuming every mismatch requires a different formation.
What roles and focuses do
A role describes what a player is mainly responsible for and how that player behaves away from the ball. A focus modifies that role’s characteristics, so the same role can be configured to emphasize different behavior. Because roles have trade-offs, a more aggressive contribution can come with less defensive support or a slower recovery. The relevant question is not simply whether a role sounds attacking or defensive; it is whether its movement and costs suit the team around it.

FC 26 adds a Versatile focus and revises or adds focuses for existing roles. It also changes one name from FC 25: the Advanced Forward Complete focus becomes Advanced Forward Versatile. These are version-sensitive details, so check the current in-game description before assigning a role based on a player-specific recommendation found elsewhere. The game’s current description is the practical reference for what each option is intended to do.
Four roles added in FC 26
| Role | EA’s described behavior | What that means when evaluating a tactic |
|---|---|---|
| Ball-Playing Keeper | Offers a passing option during build-up and stays on the line in defense. | Consider whether you want the goalkeeper available as an outlet when building play, while retaining that stated defensive behavior. |
| Wide Back | A central defender who covers wide areas. | Look at how the role affects coverage on the sides of your defensive line. |
| Inverted Wingback | Advances into a high central position in possession. | Check whether that movement provides the central presence you want and how the remaining players cover the space. |
| Box Crasher | Makes forward runs from defensive midfield but is slower to return to defensive duties. | Weigh the extra forward movement against the slower recovery when the team has to defend. |
These are descriptions of intended behavior, not a ranking or promise that a role will improve every tactic. Their value depends on the space your formation leaves, the other players’ responsibilities, and how much defensive coverage you are willing to trade for attacking movement.
What Role, Role+, Role++, and Out of Position mean
Role Familiarity indicates how proficient a player is in a role. The FC 25 system distinguished a base Role, Role+, Role++, and Out of Position. These labels can help when selecting a squad, but they should not be treated as a command to abandon a coherent tactic whenever a player lacks a higher familiarity tier. EA explicitly says base roles remain viable.

FC 26 changes how these distinctions work: EA says regular roles and Role+ are improved relative to Role++, the negative impact of being Out of Position is reduced, and players can have more positions and roles available. The game also adds a squad view that flags Out of Position indicators. Because these are changes from the previous version, older FC 25 advice about role availability or the severity of an unfamiliar assignment may not describe FC 26 exactly. Check the squad view and current role descriptions when setting a lineup.

Use familiarity as one factor among several. A player’s role fit matters, but so do the shape you are trying to create and the responsibilities assigned to teammates. If the tactic’s movement and defensive coverage work, a base role may be a reasonable choice. If the squad view flags an out-of-position assignment, inspect it and decide whether the tactical benefit justifies that fit rather than changing the whole setup automatically.
How tactical presets and Tactical Suggestions differ
A Tactical Preset is a ready-made team setup inspired by a football strategy. It is useful when you want a complete starting point instead of building every instruction from scratch, or when you want to learn by adjusting an existing setup. EA Help says Tactical Presets are compatible with available formations; Custom Presets may have incompatibilities. If you change settings, read any compatibility warning and inspect the in-game summary rather than assuming the resulting tactic still behaves like its original preset.
Rank #4
Tactical Suggestions are not the same thing as selecting a fixed preset. EA says FC 26 suggestions create a version of the tactic suited to your players while preserving your existing formation. That makes them a way to adapt the setup to the squad without treating a suggested change as a formation switch. For the distinction and general preset guidance, see EA Help’s Career Mode guidance.
FC 26 also supports saving and loading tactics with a code, and EA says compatibility converts FC 25 tactics codes to FC 26 format. A code is a convenient way to carry a setup, but conversion does not establish that every role, focus, or resulting movement will be identical between versions. Inspect the loaded tactic in FC 26, especially after a conversion or a change to a player’s role.
How to build or adjust a tactic
- Choose the defensive base first. Pick a formation whose positions and defensive arrangement suit the areas you want covered. Since the formation determines the base shape without the ball, begin by deciding what you need the team to protect before fine-tuning attacking movement.
- Choose roles to create the movement you want. Consider what each player should do away from the ball: provide support, move forward, hold a position, or cover a particular area. Think about the whole team, not one player in isolation, because a role’s movement changes the space and responsibilities left for teammates.
- Select a focus that suits the intended behavior. A focus modifies a role; it is not a separate formation. Read its in-game description and consider the costs as well as the benefit, particularly if a more attacking instruction reduces defensive support or slows recovery.
- Check the squad view indicators. Review role familiarity and any Out of Position flags. Decide whether the assignment’s tactical purpose is worth a less suitable role fit; do not assume the strongest familiarity tier is mandatory for every player.
- Inspect both team shapes. Use the With Ball view to assess spacing and movement in possession, and the Without Ball view to check the defensive arrangement. Look for whether the roles create the support and coverage you intended, rather than relying on the formation graphic alone.
- Review the tactical breakdown. FC 26 adds a chart covering Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length, and Endurance. Use those categories to identify which part of the setup needs attention, then adjust relevant instructions and recheck the shapes.
- Resolve compatibility issues and test the final setup. If you start from a preset or modify a custom setup, review warnings and the in-game summary. If you load or convert a tactics code, inspect the tactic in the current game before relying on its displayed label or assuming it behaves exactly as expected.
This process separates a shape problem from a player-fit problem. If the defense is organized as intended but the attack lacks the movement you wanted, revisit roles and focuses. If the team’s defensive arrangement is wrong, reconsider the formation before trying to fix it with attacking instructions. If one player’s assignment is the issue, review that role and its familiarity rather than resetting the entire tactic.

How to choose a preset or decide what to change
For a new player, a preset is a sensible first setup: it lets you begin with an organized tactic and learn what the roles do through the two squad views. It is also useful for an experienced player who wants a baseline to customize. Start with the preset whose overall approach fits your intended style, then make deliberate changes rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.
When comparing formations, roles, or presets, judge them on four practical axes:
- Defensive shape: Does the base arrangement cover the spaces you care about when the team is without the ball?
- In-possession spacing and width: Does the With Ball view show enough room and nearby support for the way you want to build attacks?
- Role fit and familiarity: Do the selected assignments make sense for the players available, including any Out of Position indicators?
- Attacking contribution versus recovery: Do forward runs or other attacking behavior leave a defensive gap or take longer to recover than you can accept?
There is no official evidence in EA’s feature explanations establishing one universally best formation or preset. Those sources explain the system’s design and behavior, not comparative match results that rank tactics for every player and squad. The useful choice is therefore the setup whose defensive base, role movement, and trade-offs suit the way you play and the players you have.

FC 25 provides the foundational explanation of how formations, roles, focuses, and tactics interact; FC 26 adds options and changes the system. The feature figures often repeated from FC IQ’s original launch should not be mistaken for current FC 26 totals: EA said FC 25 launched with 31 roles and 52 role-focus combinations. Those are FC 25 launch-era counts, and FC 26 adds roles and focuses, so they do not describe the current version’s complete set.
- FC 26 adds Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, and Box Crasher.
- It adds a Versatile focus, changes Advanced Forward Complete to Advanced Forward Versatile, and adds or revises focuses for existing roles.
- EA says regular roles and Role+ are improved relative to Role++, Out of Position penalties are reduced, and players can have more positions and roles available.
- New squad views show Out of Position indicators and With/Without Ball shapes; a tactical breakdown chart covers six categories: Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length, and Endurance.
- Players can save and load tactics codes, and FC 25 codes are converted to FC 26 format. Tactical Suggestions adapt to players while keeping the existing formation.
