Fear the Spotlight became Blumhouse Games’ first published title after the label discovered the already-released indie horror game and approached its two-person development team. The resulting partnership gave Cozy Game Pals more time to expand the story, support for console ports and localization, and a publisher for the expanded edition released on October 22, 2024.
Who made Fear the Spotlight?
Fear the Spotlight was created by Cozy Game Pals, the two-person team of Crista Castro and Bryan Singh. The original version appeared on Steam in 2023, before Blumhouse Games was involved. It is a third-person horror adventure set at Sunnyside High: after a séance goes wrong and Amy disappears, Vivian explores the school, avoids a monster, solves puzzles and investigates an old tragedy.

The game’s low-poly, original PlayStation-inspired visuals are part of its deliberate design rather than an attempt to reproduce a particular older game. Singh explained that the low-fidelity look helped the team focus on atmosphere and pacing; players can adjust the TV filter, polygon wobble and camera wobble. He described the result as “far more a scary teen adventure than something like Silent Hill or Resident Evil.”
How did it become Blumhouse Games’ first title?
Blumhouse Games staff Zach Wood and Louise Blain discovered the Steam release, played it and contacted Cozy Game Pals. According to Engadget’s October 25, 2024 account of interviews with the developers, the team wanted help reaching more players. Early conversations focused on bringing the game to consoles and adding language support; Blumhouse also offered the developers more time to build out the game.

Cozy Game Pals removed the original Steam release in October 2023 while saying the game would return with new gameplay, console versions and localization. The expanded edition, published by Blumhouse Games, arrived on October 22, 2024. That made it the first title in the label’s publishing roster—not a game Blumhouse had commissioned as an adaptation of one of its films.
What changed in the expanded edition?
The central addition was a new story segment for Amy, following Vivian’s original section and connecting the two characters’ journeys. Engadget described the added material as roughly doubling the game’s runtime; that is a reported comparison, not a precise measured playtime. The release also brought the planned console versions and additional localization.

The partnership extended beyond publishing. Engadget reported that Blumhouse helped with marketing, porting, localization, the logo and key art, while Cozy Game Pals retained the creative vision. In practical terms, the arrangement addressed the team’s reach and production needs while keeping the game an independent studio’s original horror story.
Why was Blumhouse publishing games?
Blumhouse had announced a games publishing business to support independent developers making original horror games. In a June 2024 interview, Blumhouse president Abhijay Prakash said gaming was relevant to the company’s existing audience and offered an opportunity to apply its film-business approach to another entertainment medium. The Los Angeles Times reported that the label then targeted mostly indie-level budgets under $5 million per title and was beginning with original games rather than adaptations of Blumhouse movies. Those were descriptions of its strategy at the time, not a disclosed budget for Fear the Spotlight or a guarantee of the label’s current policy.
Against that stated strategy, Fear the Spotlight was a concrete first release: an original game made by an independent team, with outside support from a film company, rather than a tie-in to an existing Blumhouse property. It also suited a horror label without requiring the game to imitate a movie’s format or identity.

The game emphasizes stealth, exploration and tactile puzzles over combat spectacle. Vivian uses found objects such as a flashlight, screwdriver and wrench while navigating Sunnyside High and trying to find Amy. Cozy Game Pals presents it as a story- and atmosphere-led love letter to 1990s horror. Singh said the team hoped it would work for both genre fans and people new to horror games.
