Final Fantasy V lets you change a character’s job and carry learned job abilities into new role combinations. Final Fantasy VI instead gives characters individual abilities and uses magicite to teach many spells and grant esper summons. In short, V puts more of the build choice in the player’s job-and-ability setup; VI develops a cast of distinct characters through their abilities and magicite.

How the job system works in Final Fantasy V

In Final Fantasy V, a character’s job level is separate from their character level. Characters earn Ability Points to advance a job, and job progression unlocks that job’s abilities. The PlayStation Final Fantasy Anthology manual explains the system and its job progression: Final Fantasy V and VI manuals.

Changing jobs does not erase abilities already learned. A character can take learned capabilities into another job configuration, allowing the player to combine a chosen role with abilities developed elsewhere. The central question is therefore: Which job should this character use, and which learned abilities should accompany it?

How abilities and magic work in Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy VI gives its characters individual identities and characteristic abilities rather than asking the player to assign them a changing roster of jobs. Magicite provides a separate way for many characters to learn magic. The Final Fantasy VI Advance instruction manual puts it this way: “By equipping magicite, the crystallized essence of an esper’s power, characters can learn magic spells and gain the ability to summon the mystic beasts.” The manual also describes characters progressing toward spells associated with their equipped magicite. Magicite thus broadens what characters can learn without replacing their individual abilities. Terra is a notable exception to treating magic as something characters acquire only through magicite: Square Enix describes her as born with the ability to wield magic. Starting structure Characters can change jobs. Characters have distinct identities and special abilities.
How abilities develop Ability Points advance job levels and unlock job abilities. Magicite teaches associated spells to characters; characters also have individual abilities.
What carries forward Learned job abilities can remain available after a job change. Magicite expands magic access while character abilities distinguish the cast.
Build question Which job and learned abilities should this character use? How should this character’s identity be developed, and which magicite should they equip?

This is a broad comparison of the systems, not a claim that every character or release behaves identically. The job-system reference is a PlayStation Final Fantasy Anthology manual, while the magicite explanation comes from the Final Fantasy VI Advance manual; edition and story progression can affect details.

Does Final Fantasy VI have a job system?

Not in the same sense as Final Fantasy V. Its core distinction is that characters retain their own identities and abilities rather than being freely reassigned jobs. Magicite lets players shape spell learning and access to esper summons, but that is a different kind of customization from changing jobs and combining learned job abilities in V.
