A few reported emulator runs have reached gameplay, but they also show crashes, visual faults, or choppy performance. Sony’s PS5 prices provide a dated console-cost baseline, while the available evidence does not establish what a PC capable of comparable emulation would cost.
Can a PC emulate PS5 games?
Yes, experimental PS5 emulators exist, but that does not mean they can reliably run a broad selection of games. PS5PCEM describes itself as experimental and says compatibility, performance, graphics, audio, and stability vary by game and hardware. SharpEmu describes its development as early-stage, with accuracy and infrastructure taking priority over game-specific compatibility. Those are project descriptions, not independent certifications of how well the software works.
A game reaching a menu or accepting input is only one step toward a usable experience. It does not establish that the game will run smoothly, display correctly, remain stable, or be completable. There is no broadly representative compatibility rate or standardized PC-versus-console benchmark in the available evidence.
How does reported emulator performance compare with playing on a PS5?
One limited snapshot comes from Tom’s Hardware’s July 31, 2026 report on Kyty. The publication reported that XIII reached real-time gameplay with player input at up to about 30 FPS, but had visible environmental-rendering and texture glitches. It also reported Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants running at roughly 22–24 FPS after a crash on the first launch; the reported run was choppy.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
These are observations from particular Kyty tests, not a general performance estimate. The report does not establish a representative result across games or a like-for-like comparison with those games running on a PS5. Treat them as evidence that some titles can reach gameplay, not as proof of a smooth or complete experience.
PS5PCEM’s repository also lists examples at different stages, from menus and gameplay to rendering milestones, and directs users to its compatibility documentation for each example’s scope and limitations. One Ghost of Yōtei scene is labeled “not playable yet” at 0.6 FPS. A project capture or a game booting is not the same as a playable, everyday alternative to a console.

What PC does PS5 emulation require?
There is no universal PC requirement across PS5 emulator projects. PS5PCEM’s listed requirements apply to its Windows x64 prototype only; another project or build may differ.
- Operating system: Windows 10 version 2004 or newer.
- Processor: x86-64-v3, including AVX2, BMI2, and FMA instruction support.
- Graphics driver: a current driver capable of Vulkan 1.2.
This is a minimum compatibility specification, not a tested recommendation for a particular game or a promise of a given frame rate. The project’s documentation does not provide a complete PC parts list that can be used to price a system for a specific playable result.

What do you need besides the emulator?
Emulator software is not a complete game package. PS5PCEM says it does not include games, firmware, keys, system libraries, or console software. Its repository instructs users to use content and system files they are legally entitled to use. Legal rules can vary by jurisdiction; this information does not determine whether a particular method of obtaining or using files is lawful where you live.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is emulation cheaper than buying a PS5?
The available figures do not establish that. A fair comparison would need current regional prices for a PC or upgrades that meet a stated performance target, as well as the cost of legally obtained games and any relevant storage, controller, display, or online services. The emulator requirements above are not a tested recommended build, and the reported game runs do not establish a target PC configuration. Comparing “free” emulator software with a console price alone would leave out the hardware and other costs needed to play.

What does playing on a PS5 offer instead?
Sony presents PS5 as a supported console product with PS5 console exclusives and backward compatibility with PS4 games. Its product page says the PS5 plays more than 8,500 PS4 games; that figure refers to PS4 games, not the number of PS5-native titles, and does not mean every game performs identically.
The practical distinction is between a console product with Sony-described game support and emulator projects whose compatibility and performance vary by title. Sony’s Vice President of Global Marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, said in the March 27, 2026 price announcement: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.”
How to judge a PS5 emulator claim
When a project or report says a game is “playable,” check what that means in the specific example. A useful test report identifies:
- The game and exact game version, plus the emulator and build.
- The PC’s CPU, GPU, graphics driver, and operating system.
- Whether the game only boots, reaches a menu, accepts input, or supports sustained gameplay.
- Frame rate and frame pacing, crashes, and visible or audio faults.
- Any firmware, system-file, or setup dependencies.
Without those details and reproducible testing, isolated milestones cannot establish how a game will run on another PC or whether it can be completed reliably.
