Fortnite does not continuously send every voice conversation to Epic for review. When Voice Reporting is on, the game keeps a rolling five-minute audio buffer on participants’ devices; if someone submits a voice report, the report and the latest five minutes of audio are sent to Epic moderators. Chat access, reporting options, and possible consequences depend on account settings, age, and the conduct reported.
How does voice reporting in Fortnite work?
With Voice Reporting on, Fortnite holds the most recent five minutes of voice chat locally on participants’ devices, such as a console or PC. As the buffer advances, older audio is deleted. Epic says it cannot access voice-chat audio unless Voice Reporting is on and a participant submits a report. A report uploads the latest five minutes—not an unlimited recording—to Epic moderators for review. See Epic’s November 16, 2023 announcement and its current voice-reporting FAQ.

Who has Voice Reporting on?
Epic says Voice Reporting is always on for players under 18. Adults can choose a preference, but “Off When Possible” is conditional: it turns reporting off only in qualifying parties formed among friends when every participant has selected “Off When Possible.” Check the reporting status shown in the game’s Sidebar rather than assuming the preference applies to every party or channel. Muting yourself or turning voice chat off are separate ways to limit communication.

How to report bad player behavior in Fortnite
Fortnite provides in-game routes for reporting a voice conversation, text chat, or a player. The precise menus and text-report choices can depend on whether the relevant chat feature and reporting settings are enabled. Epic’s reporting instructions describe these routes:

- Voice conversation: Open the profile or social controls, select the relevant menu, then choose Report chat. When Voice Reporting is on, the reportable audio is limited to the latest five minutes.
- Text chat: If text chat and text reporting are available and enabled, report the conversation through the Chats interface or open a specific message’s menu and report that message.
- Player conduct: Use the in-game report menu, the player’s profile, or the recently played or voice-channel player list. Select the player and the applicable report reason.
Give an accurate account of what happened and select the report route that fits the conduct. A report is information for Epic to assess against its Terms of Service and Code of Conduct; submitting one does not itself establish a violation or guarantee a sanction.
How to manage party, voice chat, and text chat options
Fortnite’s chat controls determine who can communicate with a player and through which channel. They do not determine whether voice audio is reportable; that is controlled separately by Voice Reporting. Epic’s chat options guide describes the main choices:

- Game Chat: Communication with players in the same island instance, when the island creator supports it.
- Audience: The available settings are Everybody; Friends, Team Members, and Connections; Friends Only; and Off.
- Individual controls: Players can mute or unmute others, deafen, and adjust communication preferences.
Availability can vary by age, account status, and parental settings. Epic says chat defaults to Off for players who indicated they are under 18, and children under 10 have a maximum setting of Friends Only. Parental controls may impose stricter limits. Cabined accounts may not have voice or text chat until a parent or guardian completes the required consent process. Epic’s parental-controls and cabined-account information describes age-related options; check the account portal and in-game menus for the settings currently available to the account.
Epic also cautions that switching off voice chat in an Epic game may not disable a console’s own party-chat system. Parents who want to limit communication should review the console’s platform-level controls as well as Epic’s settings.

What happens after a report?
Epic reviews reports to determine whether action is warranted. Its Community Rules and Terms of Service govern conduct and enforcement. Epic says consequences depend on the severity of the conduct and the number of offenses; the options described in its Reporting Misconduct policy include:
- A warning.
- Removal of offending content in relevant experiences or marketplaces.
- A temporary restriction on features, which may include purchases, adding friends, or social features such as voice or text chat.
- A permanent account ban.
These are possible measures, not a fixed sequence or guaranteed result for every Fortnite voice report. Epic does not publish a promise that a particular report will lead to a sanction.

How do I appeal a Fortnite communication ban?
If Epic restricts communication on an account, check the account email for the case notice and Sanction ID. The appeal route is Epic’s Sanctions and Appeals portal: sign in, review the case, and follow the appeal steps if the sanction is eligible. Epic says some violations cannot be appealed, and Support cannot review or override a communication ban outside the specified process. See Epic’s communication-ban appeal instructions.
