Review AI-generated art asset by asset, then sign off against the exact release candidate. A reliable gate checks visual and technical quality, rights and human contribution, provenance evidence, and the destination platform’s disclosure rules separately: passing one check does not clear the others.

What should an AI-art review establish?

For each asset that could reach players or appear in marketing, the studio needs to answer four different questions:

  • Does it work as art and as a production asset? Check the image itself and how it behaves in the game or store materials.
  • What rights and human contributions can the studio document? Keep the applicable licenses and a record of what people selected, arranged, edited, or created.
  • What evidence supports its origin and edit history? Treat provenance data as evidence to assess, not a clearance certificate.
  • Does the final product meet the destination platform’s requirements? Complete disclosures against the submitted build and store page, not an earlier plan.

These checks address different risks. For example, a provenance manifest can help document an asset’s history but cannot establish that the image is lawful to use. Likewise, being able to claim copyright in a human contribution does not answer whether the image infringes someone else’s rights.

1. Inventory every asset that could ship

Build a release-candidate inventory at the asset level rather than estimating AI use from a folder name or a project-wide percentage. Include assets embedded in composites as well as standalone images: textures, UI, icons, backgrounds, and art derived from AI-generated concepts. Record intended use so the studio can distinguish material that stays internal from material that ships, appears in marketing, or is generated during play.

For each final asset, connect its identifier to its source file and review record. Capture, where known and permitted by studio policy:

  • Intended use and whether the asset is internal-only, shipped and player-consumed, marketing/store-page material, or generated live during play.
  • Tool and model, including version if available, plus the generation or edit date.
  • Prompts and reference inputs, subject to privacy, confidentiality, and tool-use policies.
  • Human selection and creative work, such as composition, redraw, paint-over, or other expressive edits.
  • Applicable tool, model, and source-asset licenses or terms, along with approvals.
  • Reviewer, review date, decision, and any unresolved exception.

This classification matters for Steam: its Content Survey covers AI-created content that ships with a game and is consumed by players, including artwork, and distinguishes pre-generated content from live generation. Store-page materials also need to remain consistent with the product being submitted.

2. Inspect the actual asset in context

Have an artist or art lead review the final asset at its shipped resolution and in its intended context. These are practical production controls, not requirements stated in the platform documents cited here. For a game asset, inspect it in-engine where relevant rather than approving only a prompt preview or a high-resolution source image.

Visual and art-direction checks

  • Look for anatomy or hand errors, broken silhouettes, repeated motifs, unintended text or logos, and inconsistent perspective or lighting.
  • Compare the result with the project’s visual bible and nearby assets. Check whether a composite still has coherent style, scale, and detail.
  • For textures, look for tiling seams and evaluate the asset in-engine under representative lighting and at its intended mip levels.

Technical and integration checks

  • Inspect edges, transparency, alpha channels, compression artifacts, and color profile.
  • Verify dimensions and file behavior against the asset’s production requirements.
  • Check the final imported or packaged version, especially if conversion or optimization may have changed its appearance or metadata.

Log a concrete disposition for each reviewed asset: approved, needs revision, rejected, or escalated. If a revision changes the delivered asset, review that new version rather than carrying forward approval from a different file.

3. Document human contribution and review rights separately

Keep evidence of what the human artist or designer actually contributed; a prompt log alone does not establish that the output contains sufficient human authorship for U.S. copyright protection. The U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 announcement says that protectability depends on sufficient expressive elements determined by a human author. Human-authored work perceptible in the output, or a human’s creative arrangement or modification, may matter. The Office’s Register of Copyrights said, “Where that creativity is expressed through the use of AI systems, it continues to enjoy protection.” Read this as a U.S. copyrightability position, not a universal rule or a guarantee for any particular asset. U.S. Copyright Office, January 29, 2025

For the studio’s record, retain the relevant tool terms and licenses as they applied when the asset was generated, the permission basis for reference material, and notes or source files showing human edits, selection, or composition. A person’s creative contribution may be relevant to copyrightability, but that is a separate question from whether use of the image is licensed or infringes another party’s rights. The cited Office announcement concerns copyrightability of outputs; it does not resolve infringement, training-data licensing, or the laws of other countries.

Escalate recognizable characters or logos, concerns about imitation of a living artist, suspiciously close matches, and uncertain reference sources for appropriate legal review. There is no universal “safe similarity” threshold established by the cited sources, so a checklist cannot promise to eliminate infringement risk.

4. Use provenance signals as evidence, not proof of clearance

Start with original exports when available. Check for Content Credentials or other C2PA manifests and supported watermarks, then preserve the validation result alongside the asset and compare it with vendor records and internal logs. C2PA can carry signed assertions about matters such as creator, copyright holder, rights, and licensing. Its specification says the standard should not judge whether provenance assertions are “good” or “bad”; it addresses whether the assertions can be validated as associated with the asset, correctly formed, and free from tampering. A valid manifest therefore supports an audit trail but does not independently prove that its claims are true or that the asset is lawful to use. C2PA specification, version 2.4

Provider-specific checks have limits too. OpenAI describes signals associated with its own generated content; they are not a universal detector for artwork from every AI system, nor do they establish legal ownership, accuracy, authorship, or context. Metadata can be stripped during conversion, editing, or sharing, and watermarks may become undetectable after substantial edits. Preserve original files and supporting records; if no signal appears, treat origin as unknown unless other evidence establishes it. A negative check is not proof of human origin. 5. Review content safety and complete the right platform disclosures

Review assets against the game’s age rating, community expectations, and the current policies of each destination. Platform forms and standards are not interchangeable; an answer accepted for one store does not establish compliance elsewhere.

Destination What to verify Release implication
Steam Complete the Content Survey accurately, distinguishing pre-generated player-consumed content from live-generated output. Include shipped artwork within the survey’s scope. Steam says it compares survey responses with the product build and store page. It reviews pre-generated AI output before release; for live-generated output, it expects a description of guardrails. Steamworks Content Survey
Roblox Check the Community Standards and Content Maturity obligations that apply to the experience, including AI interaction disclosures and restrictions for extended interactions. Roblox makes developers responsible for third-party generated content meeting its standards. Review the current Creator Hub guidance and complete relevant disclosures. Roblox Creator Hub: Generative AI
Other storefronts or jurisdictions Check each destination’s own current content, disclosure, and legal requirements. Do not infer another platform’s rules from Steam or Roblox, or treat a platform disclosure as a legal opinion.

For live generation, document the safeguards the experience actually uses and ensure the platform description matches them. For any destination, assess the final presentation—not just whether an image file was generated before release—including how players encounter the content and what appears on the store page.

6. Sign off against the exact release candidate

Make the release decision traceable. Store a dated sign-off connected to the asset inventory, build number, store-page materials, platform survey answers, and any exceptions. The record should let another reviewer identify which version of each asset and which build were approved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Freeze or identify the release-candidate build and store materials being reviewed.
  2. Reconcile the inventory with the build and marketing surfaces; investigate any missing or newly added AI-assisted asset.
  3. Confirm each asset’s visual/technical decision, rights and human-contribution record, provenance status, and relevant platform classification.
  4. Complete or verify platform disclosures against the final build and store page, including any live-generation safeguards.
  5. Record approvers, date, build identifier, open exceptions, and the disposition of each exception.
  6. Repeat the comparison after late art changes, localization, marketing updates, or a replacement build.

Steam notes that some survey responses may require Steam Support to change after approval. If a release edit changes the product or its disclosure, review the survey rather than assuming the original submission still describes the build.

How to evaluate an AI-art review workflow

There is no single review tool established by the cited sources as best for game studios. Compare a workflow by whether it can support the studio’s evidence and release process, not by whether it produces a confident “AI” or “human” label.

  • Supported file types and which AI-associated signals it can actually check.
  • Provenance coverage, known blind spots, and retention of original files and audit logs.
  • Integration with the asset database, build pipeline, and release sign-off record.
  • Fields for rights, licenses, source references, human edits, and approvals.
  • Visual QA and content-moderation capabilities, plus accessibility and privacy controls.
  • Support for the studio’s actual release platforms and a process for missing or conflicting evidence.

Treat automated detectors as limited inputs to review, not universal classifiers or legal clearance systems. A useful workflow makes uncertainty visible and leaves a record of how the team resolved it.
