If your PS5 says there isn’t enough space to install a game, open Settings > Storage to see what is using the console’s storage. The quickest fix is usually deleting an installed game or app you can download again later. You may also be able to remove unused add-ons or completed game portions, or move games elsewhere. For PS5 games you want to keep ready to play, a compatible M.2 SSD is the storage option; USB extended storage can archive PS5 games, but cannot run them directly.
Check what is taking up space
On the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Storage. The storage screen shows the space available and breaks down use by games and apps, media, and saved data. Use the console’s own install prompt and storage display to judge how much room you need: PlayStation does not give one universal free-space requirement for every game install or update.
Game and app installs, media, and saved data are separate categories. Don’t treat deleting saved data as a routine way to make room for a game. If you are considering removing a save, first make sure you understand what that means for your progress and whether you have a backup. PlayStation Plus cloud storage requires a subscription. PlayStation’s storage guide explains the console’s storage categories and management options.
Delete games or apps you can download again
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select a game or app you no longer need installed.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
Deleting a purchased game removes its installed data, not your access to the purchase. You can download it again from your game library, provided you can access the account and have a network connection. See PlayStation’s instructions for managing PS5 storage.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Remove parts of a game, if Customize is available
Some games let you remove selected add-ons or completed portions without deleting the entire game. In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select the game and look for Customize. If it appears, review the available content and remove only what you no longer need. This feature is title-dependent, so it may not appear for every game. PlayStation describes the option in its storage-management guide.
Choose where to keep games you don’t want to delete
| Storage choice | What it is useful for | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | Archiving PS5 games or storing and playing PS4 games. | PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage; copy them back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Keeping PS5 games installed, playable, and updateable. | The drive must meet PlayStation’s requirements for your console model, including interface, capacity, size, and heat dissipation. |
USB extended storage: archive PS5 games, play PS4 games
You can move PS5 games to USB extended storage to free space on the console, but you must copy a PS5 game back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing it. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. PlayStation specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. It also warns that not all drives are guaranteed to work, a drive cannot be connected through a USB hub, and only one USB extended-storage drive can be connected at a time. Formatting a drive as USB extended storage erases data on it, so back up anything you need first. Details are in PlayStation’s USB extended-storage guide.

M.2 SSD: keep PS5 games ready to play
A compatible M.2 SSD adds storage where PS5 games can remain installed, be played, and receive updates. PlayStation’s M.2 installation guide covers adding a drive. Check requirements for your exact PS5 model before buying: Sony says third-party compatibility is not guaranteed for every drive.
For the CFI-71XX model group, Sony’s safety guide lists M.2 capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, supported lengths of 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110, and PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe (Key M). M.2 SATA is unsupported, and compatible heat-dissipation parts are required. These specifications are for that model group; consult the documentation for your own console rather than assuming every PS5 has identical requirements.

Free space remotely with the PlayStation App
If you are away from the console or a download is blocked for lack of room, PlayStation says the PlayStation App can manage PS5 console storage remotely. This can help clear internal storage so the download can finish, but it does not add storage capacity. See PlayStation’s getting-ready guide for the app’s storage-management option.
Quick Recap
Which fix should you choose?
- Need space quickly: delete an installed game or app you can download again.
- Want to keep most of a game installed: check whether Customize lets you remove unused content.
- Want to keep PS5 games but don’t need them playable right now: move them to USB extended storage and copy them back when you want to play.
- Want PS5 games to stay installed and playable: use a compatible M.2 SSD after checking your console model’s requirements.
