Adding an item does not buy it, grant ownership, install it, or create a game save. A wishlist entry is a store record; an owned game is an entitlement in your library; a saved game is your progress data. Those records are managed separately, and the exact behavior depends on the storefront and account.
How do game wishlists work?
A wishlist lets you mark a game or add-on so you can find it again, watch its price, or receive certain store notifications. Epic Games Store describes the purpose plainly: “You can add games that you’re interested in playing to your wishlist to buy them later or track discounts.” Xbox similarly describes its list as a way to “Keep track of your most wanted games, add-ons, and more with the Xbox wish list.”

The important boundary is ownership. A wishlist does not constitute a purchase, license, subscription entitlement, or download. Until you complete a transaction or obtain the game through another qualifying offer, the item is not part of your library as an owned title. A wishlist also does not contain your in-game progress. Character levels, checkpoints, settings, and other progress are saved separately by the game and platform.

Three records that are easy to confuse

PlayStation’s support documentation treats wishlist notifications, library access, installed applications, and saved data as separate subjects. That separation is a useful model on every platform, even though menus and retention policies differ.

Where your wishlist lives
Wishlists are generally attached to the account for a particular storefront, not to a console’s local storage. Sign in to the same account to see the list on another supported device. A list made in one store is not automatically shared with another store that sells the same game.
Steam
On Steam, open a game’s store page while signed in and choose Add to your Wishlist. You can view and edit the list in the Steam client or in a browser, reorder entries, and remove items. Steam’s Community Profile privacy settings control who can see the list: all users, friends, or only you. The privacy setting is an account-level choice, so changing devices does not create a separate local list.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says games with publicly visible store pages can be wishlisted. It also says wishlist notifications may be sent for events such as a release or a discount. That is an eligibility and trigger system, not a promise that every user receives an email for every event; notification emails depend on multiple conditions.
Epic Games Store
In the Epic Games Store, add a game from its listing or detail page with the wishlist control. Open Wishlist from the Store or Launcher to review the entries, and use the wishlist control on an item to remove it. Epic identifies two core uses: remembering a game for a later purchase and tracking discounts.

Xbox
Xbox describes wishlists for games, add-ons, and other store items. Microsoft says the list can be accessed after signing in with the associated Microsoft account on Xbox.com, Xbox consoles, and Xbox apps for iOS, Android, and Windows. App features and regional availability can change, so the current signed-in store view is the authority for your account.
PlayStation
PlayStation provides controls for wishlist update notifications. Its support notices also show why a wishlist should not be treated as a permanent archive: in one documented feature discontinuation, PlayStation stated that the items then on that particular wishlist would be deleted. That is evidence of a platform-specific service change, not a universal rule that applies to every PlayStation list or every delisted game.
What happens to games on my wishlist?
In the normal case, the item remains a reminder until you remove it, buy it, or the store changes how it is listed. A price change may make the item eligible for a notification, but an alert is not a purchase and does not reserve stock, a discount, or access. If you buy the game, the purchase is recorded in your library; the wishlist entry is still a separate store record and may need to be removed manually depending on the platform.

Some stores use wishlist events to send release or discount notices. Steam documents conditional notifications, and PlayStation offers wishlist-update notification controls. Check your account’s email, push, and privacy settings if you expect an alert. Do not assume that a missing message means the list was deleted or that the discount was unavailable; the notification rules may simply not have been met.

If a game is delisted, renamed, or region-locked
There is no single industry-wide retention rule. A store may leave an old entry visible, replace it with another product page, hide it from search, or remove it during a service change. The available documentation does not establish one universal outcome for delisted, renamed, or region-locked products, nor a universal retention period after an account is closed or migrated.
If an entry matters to you, record the title and publisher yourself and check the storefront’s current help page or service notice. A wishlist is a convenience feature, not a legal or technical guarantee that a listing will remain available. Buying a game, where appropriate and available, creates a separate library entitlement; it does not guarantee that every future version or region will be accessible.
Is a game on my wishlist saved or purchased?
No. “Saved” in a wishlist context means that the store saved a reference to the item in your account. It does not mean the game is purchased, downloaded, or backed up. You can verify ownership by looking in the platform’s library or account purchase history, not by looking at the wishlist.
A purchased game can be absent from the device because it has not been installed, was uninstalled, or is hidden by a filter. Conversely, an installed game can be present on a device without the current account owning it, for example when another account made the purchase or when access came through a time-limited entitlement. The library and account that hold the entitlement determine whether you can download or launch it.

Are wishlist games the same as saved games?
No. A wishlist entry is a store database record. A saved game is progress data produced by the game. Deleting a wishlist item does not delete a save file, and deleting a save file does not normally remove a wishlist item. Installing or deleting the game application is a third category again.
Installed data versus saved data
PlayStation’s PS5 storage guidance makes the distinction explicit. You can delete a PS5 game or application to free space and re-download a purchase from your game library later. The saved data has separate storage controls, so removing the application is not the same action as removing progress. Other platforms use their own menus and policies, but you should look for separate entries labelled saved data, save files, or cloud saves before confirming deletion.
- Deleting an installation: removes program files from the device; it may leave the account entitlement and save data intact.
- Deleting local saves: removes progress from that device and can be irreversible if no other copy exists.
- Removing a wishlist item: removes the store reminder, not the installation, entitlement, or progress.
How do I back up my game saves?
Back up saves through the platform’s save-data tools, not through its wishlist. First identify whether your game supports cloud synchronization and whether the service requires a subscription. Then confirm which account is signed in and whether the most recent progress has finished uploading before changing devices or deleting local data.
PS5 and PlayStation Plus cloud storage
PlayStation documents cloud storage for supported PS5 and PS4 saved data through PlayStation Plus. The relevant controls let you upload saves from the console, download a copy, and manage synchronization between the console and cloud. Cloud storage requires the applicable PlayStation Plus membership, and supported data and synchronization behavior can vary by game and platform generation.

- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the save and has the applicable PlayStation Plus access.
- Open the console’s saved-data and game/app settings, then select the PS5 or PS4 saved-data controls as appropriate.
- Choose the cloud-storage option and upload the local save, or enable the available synchronization control.
- After switching consoles or reinstalling a game, return to the same saved-data area and download the required cloud copy.
- Check the save’s date and game version before overwriting a newer local file with an older cloud copy.
Do not treat cloud storage as an automatic guarantee for every title. Confirm that the game and generation are supported and that the upload completed. If you have valuable progress, keep any additional platform-supported copy before deleting local data.
Other platforms
Steam, Epic, and Xbox may offer their own cloud-save behavior, but the exact support, conflict prompts, synchronization timing, and account requirements are title- and platform-specific. Use the game’s current support information and the store’s save-data settings. A wishlist cannot be used as a substitute for any of those backups.
Can a wishlist disappear?
Yes, in at least some platform-specific service changes. PlayStation has published an official notice in which a discontinued wishlist feature would delete the items on that list. This demonstrates that a wishlist is not a guaranteed permanent archive. It does not establish that every platform, every wishlist version, or every account migration follows the same rule.

For that reason, keep a personal note of games you are watching if the list is important to you. Include the exact title, edition, and region when those distinctions matter. If a service announces a feature change, follow its stated export, purchase, or account-migration instructions promptly.

- Stop playing until you determine whether a newer save could be overwritten.
- Check the console or PC’s local saved-data area and the cloud-save status.
- Sign in to the account that created the save and verify the game version.
- Review synchronization conflicts carefully; choose the copy with the correct date and progress.
Practical rules for keeping your games and progress safe
- Use the wishlist for reminders and price watching only.
- Use the library and purchase history to verify ownership.
- Use installed-data controls to manage storage space.
- Use local and cloud saved-data controls to protect progress.
- Keep the account credentials and region consistent when moving between devices.
- Before deleting anything, identify whether the menu refers to the application, local save, cloud save, or wishlist.
- Check current platform notices when a store changes, retires, or restructures a feature.
