When a horror board game bogs down, do not keep arguing from memory. Pause, identify the exact game and edition, isolate the disputed timing or rule, and check the publisher’s own materials in a sensible order. If the answer still cannot be established, agree on a temporary interpretation, record it, and continue. Treat any lookup deadline or session stopping point as a group procedure—not as an official rule.
This approach works whether you are playing a card-driven investigation, a betrayal game, a scenario campaign, or an app-assisted adventure. It protects the atmosphere without allowing one unclear sentence to consume the evening.

First, stop the drift and name the exact problem
Long pauses usually have two causes: the group is searching for an answer without defining the question, or players are debating different editions, components, or phases. Freeze only the affected part of the game. Leave the board state, hands, damage, clues, doom, and other information where they are, and state what everyone believes happened immediately before the dispute.
Write the question as a single sentence
Replace “Can we do this?” with a precise question such as: “During the enemy phase, can this monster trigger its reaction after it has been exhausted?” Include the card, tile, character, scenario, phase, and timing words that matter. If two effects conflict, read both effects aloud and identify which event occurred first.

Confirm the title and edition
Before opening a search engine or asking another group, read the box, rulebook cover, or app title. Record the edition, printing, expansion, scenario, haunt, and language if any of those differ. A second edition, revised core set, or campaign expansion may use different terminology. Advice for a similar horror game is not evidence for the game on your table.
Protect the current game state
Take a quick photograph or write down unresolved values if the discussion is likely to last. Mark whose turn it is, which phase is active, and whether an effect has already triggered. This prevents a second dispute about what happened while the first question was being investigated.
Use the rules sources in the right order
Start with material that matches the exact edition and scenario. Random summaries, forum posts, and videos may omit an erratum or apply a house rule. A useful lookup order is shown below.

Why the scenario material matters
Horror games often separate general procedures from story-specific exceptions. Hasbro’s component listings illustrate this pattern: the third edition of Betrayal at House on the Hill includes a rulebook and player reference cards, while the second edition lists a rulebook plus two haunt books. If a haunt instruction appears to contradict the base game, read the haunt’s setup and resolution text before applying a general rule.
Why a rules reference can be better than a rulebook
Some publishers maintain a separate, alphabetized reference document for questions that are difficult to locate in a narrative rulebook. Fantasy Flight Games’ support material for Arkham Horror: The Card Game, for example, provides a rulebook, a Rules Reference, and an Arkham Grimoire. The publisher’s announcement for the Grimoire states that earlier FAQ clarifications and rulings were incorporated into the official rules. That makes the current reference more reliable than an old saved FAQ, but only for that game and its supported edition.
A 10-minute rules-rescue procedure
Use this procedure when the table is stalled. The times below are suggestions for a group trying to preserve momentum, not publisher requirements.

- Call a rules pause. Say that play is paused at the current phase and identify the active player. Do not advance other effects while the question is open.
- State the disputed event. Name the exact component and quote the relevant sentence or icon. Separate what the card says from what players think it means.
- Identify the rules layer. Decide whether the answer belongs to component text, the scenario, the phase sequence, a keyword definition, or an erratum.
- Check the physical materials. Read the component, reference card, scenario or haunt booklet, and rulebook entry. Use the index, glossary, and page cross-references.
- Check the publisher’s current support. Look for an official FAQ, errata document, updated rules reference, or edition notice. Confirm the document’s date and scope.
- Assign one searcher. One person searches while the others discuss the likely interpretations without repeatedly opening unrelated pages. This avoids five people finding five different editions.
- Apply the narrowest supported answer. Prefer a specific scenario instruction over a general rule, and a current official clarification over an obsolete summary.
- Record an unresolved issue. If no authoritative answer appears, write the question, the two interpretations, and the temporary choice in the campaign log or on a note.
- Resume from the recorded game state. Announce the temporary ruling before continuing so every player understands the same assumption.
- Review after the session. Recheck the publisher’s materials when the game is no longer under pressure. Correct the log before the next session if a definitive answer is found.
What to do when the answer still cannot be found
Do not let uncertainty turn into an endless courtroom argument. Make a table decision and label it honestly as temporary. A good temporary ruling has three parts: the interpretation, the point at which it applies, and what will happen if later evidence changes it.
Use a written, reversible ruling
For example: “For this scenario only, we treat the locked door as blocking line of sight because the tile has no printed opening. We will verify this against the current reference before the next game.” Writing the decision prevents players from remembering different versions and makes later correction painless.
Use a published fallback only when it belongs to that game
Arkham Horror: The Card Game has a specific instruction in its Rules Reference: “If players are unable to find the answer to a rules or timing conflict in this Rules Reference, resolve the conflict in the manner that the players perceive as the worst possible at that moment with regards to winning the scenario, and continue with the game.” This is an official, game-specific fallback. It should not be presented as a universal rule for horror board games. If your game has no comparable instruction, choose a fair temporary interpretation as a group instead of importing Arkham’s rule.
Prefer the least disruptive interpretation
When no official fallback exists, avoid a ruling that silently rewrites earlier turns or gives one player an unexpected advantage. State whether the decision affects only the current action, the current round, or the whole scenario. If the disagreement concerns a hidden-information effect, ask the group to accept the least damaging correction that preserves information already revealed.
When the game uses an app or several books
Some horror adventures distribute the rules across physical components and software. Fantasy Flight describes Mansions of Madness Second Edition as a fully cooperative, app-assisted horror adventure. In an app-assisted game, the app’s instructions and current official support are part of the rules check, not optional flavor text.
Check the app before the paper rulebook when the prompt is digital
If the app has spawned a room, changed an objective, assigned an investigator, or displayed a scripted event, first verify that the correct scenario and edition are loaded. Read the on-screen prompt completely, including expandable text, before searching the printed rules. A physical rulebook may explain the general action while the app controls the story-specific result.

Keep software and physical state synchronized
- Confirm that every player is using the same scenario and language settings.
- Do not advance the app while a physical rule dispute is unresolved.
- Record any app-generated item, damage, clue, or objective before restarting.
- If the app crashes, follow its official recovery instructions rather than guessing which event has already resolved.
How to prevent a long lookup from ruining the atmosphere
Pacing agreements are useful, but they are house procedures. Publishers generally do not set a universal limit for how long a group may consult a rule. Agree on your process before the next session and explain that it can be changed by the table.
Choose a lookup limit that fits the group
A group might allow a brief search during play, then make a temporary ruling if the limit expires. A campaign group that values precision may choose a longer research window between scenes. The important point is that everyone consents to the procedure before a contentious question appears.
Appoint a rules lead
One player can maintain the rulebook, reference, scenario booklet, and campaign notes. Another player can read the disputed card aloud so the rules lead is not the only person interpreting text. Rotate the role if one person finds it stressful.

If fatigue is causing mistakes, stop at the end of the current round, scene, or investigation segment. Photograph the board, list unresolved questions, and store the components in labeled bags. A planned stopping point is a group choice, not a rule printed by the publisher.
Maintain a living campaign log
Record edition, scenario, house rulings, discovered errata, and questions to verify. Include page numbers or document names when you find an answer. This is especially valuable when a campaign returns to a rule several weeks later.

Searching the wrong edition
Symptom: The wording in a forum post or video does not match the component on the table.

Fix: Return to the box and rulebook cover, identify the edition, and discard advice that cannot establish its version.
Using a general rule against a scenario exception
Symptom: The base rule appears clear, but the current haunt or chapter produces an impossible result.
Fix: Read the entire scenario section and setup text. Story-specific instructions may intentionally override normal procedure.
Continuing to play while the question is open
Symptom: Several later effects depend on an unresolved action, so the group must rewind multiple turns.
Fix: Freeze the affected phase immediately and mark the current state before searching.

Symptom: Players cite a popular explanation without a publisher document or edition reference.

Fix: Use community discussion to locate terminology, then verify the conclusion against the publisher’s current materials.
Importing a rule from another horror game
Symptom: Someone applies a familiar timing convention from a different title.
Fix: Start over with the exact game title and edition. Similar themes do not imply shared rules.

Symptom: Players later argue that the group’s lookup timer or stopping point is “what the game says.”
Fix: Label every pacing agreement as a table procedure and keep it separate from official rules and errata.
A quick decision tree for the table
- Is the question about text currently in play? Read the full card, tile, character sheet, or app prompt.
- Is it unique to this scenario or haunt? Check the scenario, haunt, or chapter booklet.
- Is it a phase, keyword, or timing question? Use the player reference card, rulebook index, and rules reference.
- Could the printing be outdated? Check the publisher’s current FAQ, errata, or updated reference.
- Does the game use software? Verify the app scenario, instructions, and official support.
- Still unresolved? Apply a game-specific published fallback if one exists; otherwise record a temporary group ruling and continue.
What a successful rescue looks like
The goal is not to prove who remembered the rule. It is to preserve a shared game state, use the most authoritative source available, and make uncertainty visible when evidence runs out. A short, documented ruling keeps the story moving; a later correction can be made cleanly between sessions. By separating official instructions from table agreements, your group can move quickly without pretending that an improvised solution came from the publisher.
