Was Ghost of Tsushima the best-selling game in May 2024?
It was No. 1 on Circana’s U.S. chart of top-selling games by dollar sales for that month, ahead of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The ranking, reproduced by GamesBeat from Circana’s May 2024 report, lists Sony (Corp) as the publisher. The game had ranked No. 71 in April.

Why did Ghost of Tsushima return to the sales charts?
The PC Director’s Cut launched during the chart month
Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT launched on PC on May 16, 2024. Its release coincided with the game’s rise to No. 1, and GamesBeat described the PC launch as the likely explanation for the return. The timing makes that a reasonable explanation, but the ranking itself shows position—not a breakdown of sales by platform or proof of what caused the increase.

GamesBeat also noted an earlier boost when the game launched on PS5 and PS4 in 2021. That context does not establish how many May 2024 sales came from any particular platform.
The report does not disclose the game’s May sales total
Circana’s chart report provides the rank, but not Ghost of Tsushima’s exact May 2024 dollar sales or unit sales. A precise total cannot be inferred from its No. 1 position. A contemporary report citing Circana likewise does not provide a game-specific May sales figure.

How the result fits the wider U.S. games market
The same Circana report put total U.S. video game sales at $3.975 billion in May 2024, down 6% from $4.233 billion in May 2023. U.S. video game content spending was $3.624 billion, down 3% year over year. These are market-wide figures, not revenue generated by Ghost of Tsushima.
Why other game charts may show a different result
A chart position is meaningful only with its measure, geography, time period and storefront or platform attached. Circana’s May result is not interchangeable with a live store ranking or an annual download list.

What Sony’s sales reporting does—and does not—show
Sony’s FY2023 third-quarter supplemental information includes Ghost of Tsushima in first-party software release and sell-through reporting. Sony says its first-party sell-through figures are company estimates and exclude add-on content. That publisher reporting is distinct from Circana’s monthly chart rank; it does not supply a May 2024 unit or dollar total or attribute sales to the PC release.
