Giant tortoises are turtles, but they are land-dwelling members of the group. Sea turtles are adapted to marine life. “Giant tortoise” also does not mean one single kind of animal: Aldabra tortoises in the Seychelles and the varied populations of Galápagos giant tortoises are distinct island groups. Habitat and geographic origin are the clearest starting points for telling them apart; one small shell-area clue can help distinguish an Aldabra tortoise, but it is not a complete identification test.
Are giant tortoises turtles?
Yes. Tortoises belong to the wider turtle group, whose scientific order is Testudines. In everyday language, “turtle” can mean the whole group or, more narrowly, an aquatic member of it. “Tortoise” commonly refers to a land-dwelling turtle. That difference in usage can make it sound as if tortoises and turtles are separate groups, when the useful distinction here is chiefly how they live.

The Smithsonian lists the Aldabra giant tortoise in Testudines. The American Museum of Natural History likewise presents Galápagos giant tortoises as turtles. So a giant tortoise is not the land-based opposite of a turtle: it is a turtle whose way of life is terrestrial.
What the names tell you—and what they do not
The words “giant tortoise” describe a broad kind of land-dwelling turtle, not one interchangeable species or one uniform appearance. In this comparison, the name covers the Aldabra giant tortoise and the Galápagos giant tortoise populations. Their island ranges are far apart, and Galápagos populations themselves differ.

Conversely, “sea turtle” refers to a marine way of life. It does not identify one particular species. A general comparison between tortoises and sea turtles can explain habitat, but it should not be treated as a complete anatomical key for every species.
How land-dwelling tortoises differ from sea turtles
Habitat and movement
The defining contrast is where the animals live: giant tortoises are land-dwelling, while sea turtles are marine. This is the most useful difference to keep in mind when sorting the groups. It also shapes the way a reader should interpret depictions of them: a giant tortoise is a terrestrial animal, not a sea turtle that happens to be unusually large.
That broad distinction does not establish every detail of how each species moves. The sources supporting this comparison do not provide a full anatomy-by-anatomy account of sea-turtle flippers, shell shapes, or diving adaptations. It would therefore overstate the evidence to turn a habitat comparison into a universal list of physical differences. For a precise identification, start with the named species and its range rather than relying on a single silhouette or assumed adaptation.

Diet: a broad pattern, not a rule for every species
A National Geographic educational comparison describes tortoises as eating plants and sea turtles as eating marine foods. That is useful as a broad contrast, but it is not a guarantee about every tortoise or every sea turtle: diets vary by species and life stage. Avoid turning the general pattern into claims that all tortoises eat exactly the same plants or that all sea turtles share one diet.
For the giant tortoises discussed here, Galápagos Conservation Trust describes both the Aldabra and Galápagos groups as large herbivores. This shared broad description does not make them the same species or lineage. It is one similarity between geographically separate island groups, not evidence that “giant tortoise” names a single worldwide population.
Where the main giant-tortoise groups live
Aldabra giant tortoises
Aldabra giant tortoises are native to Aldabra in the Seychelles. The Smithsonian’s account identifies this island range and notes a small neck plate that is usually visible on an Aldabra tortoise and absent in other giant tortoise species. If you are comparing an Aldabra tortoise with another giant tortoise, that plate is a useful clue to look for.

It remains a clue, not a full identification guide. The Smithsonian description does not establish that the neck plate alone is enough to identify any tortoise in every view or image. Check the animal’s stated origin as well as its visible traits when that information is available.
Galápagos giant tortoises
Galápagos giant tortoises are found in the Galápagos Islands and belong to the genus Chelonoidis, according to Galápagos Conservancy. They are not one visually uniform set of animals. USGS research describes substantial variation among populations in size, shape, and carapace characteristics, associated with ecological variation.
That population-level diversity matters when interpreting photos, illustrations, or descriptions. A difference in outline or shell characteristics does not necessarily mean that one example is not a Galápagos giant tortoise. The available evidence supports variation across populations; it does not supply a simple visual key that assigns every individual to a particular island or population.

Galápagos Conservancy identifies the Chaco tortoise as the closest living relative of the Galápagos giant tortoises. “Closest living relative” does not mean “direct ancestor”: it describes a relationship to a living group, not a claim that the Chaco tortoise gave rise directly to the Galápagos tortoises.

Both are giant tortoise groups associated with islands and are described as large herbivores, but they have distinct geographic origins. Aldabra tortoises are native to Aldabra in the Seychelles; Galápagos giant tortoises are from the Galápagos and belong to Chelonoidis. Similarities in lifestyle do not erase those differences.
| Comparison | Aldabra giant tortoise | Galápagos giant tortoises |
|---|---|---|
| Geographic origin | Aldabra, in the Seychelles, according to the Smithsonian. | The Galápagos Islands, according to Galápagos Conservancy. |
| Group information | The Smithsonian lists it in the order Testudines. | Galápagos Conservancy places the populations in the genus Chelonoidis. |
| Variation highlighted in the sources | A small neck plate is usually visible, according to the Smithsonian. | USGS describes population variation in size, shape, and carapace characteristics. |
| Relationship detail | Galápagos Conservation Trust describes Aldabra and Galápagos groups as geographically separated island groups that followed similar evolutionary trajectories as large herbivores. | Galápagos Conservancy identifies the Chaco tortoise as the closest living relative, not a direct ancestor. |
The comparison should not be taken to mean that the groups are the same species or share an identical evolutionary history. The Galápagos Conservation Trust’s description is about similar evolutionary trajectories as large herbivores in geographically separated island groups. It is context for a broad resemblance, not a statement of sameness.

A practical way to identify what kind of turtle you are looking at
- Start with habitat. If the animal is described as land-dwelling, “tortoise” is the relevant everyday category. If it is described as marine, it belongs to the sea-turtle comparison. Do not infer a full anatomical identification from habitat alone.
- Check the location or species name. Aldabra points to the Seychelles; Galápagos giant tortoises point to the Galápagos Islands. These ranges are more informative than treating all giant tortoises as one type.
- Use the Aldabra neck plate as a supporting clue. The Smithsonian says the small plate is usually visible on Aldabra tortoises and absent in other giant tortoise species. Treat “usually” as a qualification and do not use the feature as a complete key.
- Allow for Galápagos variation. Differences in size, shape, and carapace characteristics are documented among Galápagos populations. A single outline should not be assumed to represent every population.
- Keep diet claims at the right level. Plant-eating tortoises and sea turtles feeding on marine foods is a broad educational contrast, not a universal species-by-species rule. Diet can vary with species and life stage.
What comparisons can—and cannot—establish
Habitat, range, and population variation give a solid framework for understanding the groups in this article. They answer the basic questions of whether giant tortoises are turtles, where the Aldabra and Galápagos groups come from, and why Galápagos tortoises should not be pictured as identical.
They do not provide a complete anatomical identification guide to all sea turtles and tortoises. Detailed claims about flippers, shell shape, diving adaptations, or species-by-species diets require evidence beyond the broad comparisons described here. When precision matters, use a species-level source rather than converting a useful general distinction into a rule that applies to every animal.
Why “giant tortoise” is not one interchangeable type
The term can encourage a reader to picture one standard animal, but the two island groups already show why that is misleading. Aldabra and Galápagos tortoises have different geographic origins, and the Galápagos populations show variation in size, shape, and carapace characteristics. Similarity in being large, land-dwelling herbivores is not proof that they are one species or a single lineage.
