NOAA’s remotely operated vehicles Deep Discoverer and Seirios can descend to 6,000 meters (about 3.7 miles). Pilots guide them while monitoring live video, sonar, navigation, and vehicle systems; scientists use the resulting images and samples to study places people cannot reach by diving.
What a deep-sea exploration vehicle does
A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is a tethered research platform, not simply an underwater camera. It carries imaging equipment, lights, sensors, and tools for collecting material. A cable connects it to a support ship, where a team directs the dive and monitors the vehicle. NOAA identifies Deep Discoverer and Seirios as systems capable of reaching 6,000 meters; that rating applies to those vehicles and should not be taken as a standard depth for every ROV. NOAA’s Deep Discoverer overview describes the vehicles and their operations.

During a dive, the team can record high-definition video, make observations, measure environmental conditions, and collect biological, geological, or water samples. NOAA lists measurements including salinity, temperature, depth, and dissolved oxygen among the capabilities of the Deep Discoverer system. The exact equipment and sampling options depend on the vehicle and mission.

How the ROV finds and documents a site
Lights and cameras make images possible
Sunlight does not reach the deep seafloor, so an ROV needs its own illumination. Deep Discoverer’s configuration includes high-definition video cameras and LED lamps. The lights illuminate a limited area in front of the vehicle, and cameras record what falls within their view. The footage can show organisms, rocks, and their immediate surroundings, but it is not a complete picture of everything at a site.
NOAA notes that ROV video and images are often the first collected from a particular area. Researchers can annotate observations with latitude and longitude, tying what appears in a frame to a mapped location. This makes the imagery useful both for documenting discoveries and for revisiting the position of an observation. The NOAA Deep Discoverer and Seirios factsheet lists the imaging and lighting equipment; its specifications are for these vehicles.
Sonar and navigation add context
A camera shows only the scene in its illuminated field of view. Sonar and navigation information help operators interpret the vehicle’s surroundings and manage its position relative to the seafloor. These systems complement rather than replace visual inspection: sonar can inform navigation, while video lets the team inspect visible details and decide whether a feature merits closer study.
In the control room, operators monitor camera feeds alongside sonar, navigation, and vehicle diagnostics. Their combined view supports decisions about where to move, what to document, and whether the vehicle is functioning as intended. NOAA’s control-room feature describes this shipboard monitoring environment.
From observation to a collection decision
The work is a sequence of observations and choices rather than a camera pass followed by automatic collection. The team first uses imagery and navigation data to identify a feature and decide whether a closer look or a sample could answer the scientific question. Pilots then maneuver the vehicle into position and operate the appropriate tool. The cameras continue to provide visual context while the team works, and the control room’s sonar, navigation, and diagnostic displays help them monitor the ROV as well as the target.
The vehicle’s sensors also help describe the conditions where an observation was made. Deep Discoverer’s CTD system measures conductivity, temperature, and depth; NOAA also lists salinity, temperature, depth, and dissolved oxygen among the system’s measurements. Those readings complement the images: they describe environmental conditions, rather than identifying everything visible in a frame. Together, location information, imagery, and measurements can make an observation more useful for later review.

How scientists collect specimens and seawater
Rocks and attached organisms
When the team identifies a target, pilots maneuver the ROV and operate its manipulator arms to handle objects. Recovered material can be placed in biological or rock boxes for retrieval with the vehicle. A rotary suction sampler offers another collection method, particularly for delicate material that may be difficult to grasp directly. The method depends on what is being collected and what the vehicle can safely handle.
On Deep Discoverer, the January 2025 NOAA factsheet lists two seven-function hydraulic manipulator arms, biological and rock sample boxes, and a rotary suction sampler fitted with five 2.7-liter jars. These are configuration details for Deep Discoverer, not specifications shared by all deep-sea vehicles.
Sampling is selective: the team collects particular material using the tools and capacity available during a dive. NOAA describes recovered specimens as a general representation of biological and geological information from an explored location, not a complete inventory of everything living or present there. Imagery can document a feature even when no physical sample is taken.
The tools solve different collection problems. An arm gives pilots a way to handle an object; a box provides a place to retain selected material for recovery; and suction provides an alternative for delicate material. The available configuration affects what is practical to collect. The Deep Discoverer factsheet’s stated capacity of up to 11 biological or geological samples is a maximum, not a target that every dive must meet. A research goal may call for fewer or different samples, and visual documentation can still be valuable when recovery is not appropriate or possible.
Water at a chosen depth
To collect seawater, the team can trigger a Niskin bottle at a selected depth. The Deep Discoverer factsheet lists five individually triggered bottles, each with a capacity of 1.7 liters. In a 2023 NOAA expedition example, water was collected at different depths using vehicle-mounted Niskin bottles and filtered aboard the ship for later environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. That account documents one workflow; handling and analysis vary with the scientific question and sample type. See NOAA’s 2023 expedition account.
Collecting water at different depths allows the team to retain samples associated with those selected depths rather than treating the water column as a single undifferentiated sample. In the cited expedition, shipboard filtration prepared the collected water for later eDNA work. This is an example of how ROV collection can support analysis beyond what an image reveals, not a claim that every water sample is processed or analyzed in the same way.

What happens after a dive
Once the ROV returns to the ship, the team retrieves it and removes collected material. Samples may need different handling depending on what they are and what researchers intend to study. For example, NOAA’s 2023 account describes filtering seawater aboard ship for subsequent eDNA analysis; that should not be treated as the universal processing method for every sample.
Scientists can review and annotate video and still images, then compare observations with samples brought back from the site. Biological specimens may be examined to investigate whether they represent species new to science or help clarify relationships among organisms. Rocks can help researchers understand how a seafloor area formed. NOAA says biological specimens collected by Deep Discoverer are sent to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History for study. NOAA’s vehicle overview describes these research uses.
Images remain important even when a specimen is recovered. They show the object in its surroundings and can record observations across an area, while a collected specimen supports examination of selected material. NOAA notes that video and imagery can document discoveries where no physical sample is collected. The records therefore answer related but distinct questions: what was visible and where, what selected material is, and what conditions were measured at the site.

Deep Discoverer’s equipment in context
The NOAA factsheet revised in January 2025 gives a detailed example of how imaging, navigation, sensing, and sampling equipment fit together on one vehicle. It lists a CTD system (used to measure conductivity, temperature, and depth) and sonar among Deep Discoverer’s standard sensors. The vehicle can also carry up to 11 biological or geological samples and five water samples on a dive, according to the factsheet. These are stated capacities for Deep Discoverer, not a promise that every dive collects that many samples.
| Function | Deep Discoverer equipment or capacity | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Imaging and illumination | High-definition video cameras and LED lamps | Records and illuminates the visible scene. |
| Object handling | Two seven-function hydraulic manipulator arms | Lets pilots maneuver and handle selected objects. |
| Biological and geological collection | Bio boxes and rock boxes; capacity for up to 11 biological/geological samples per dive | Holds selected material for recovery and later study. |
| Delicate-material collection | Rotary suction sampler with five 2.7-liter jars | Provides a suction-based option for collecting material. |
| Seawater collection | Five individually triggered 1.7-liter Niskin bottles; up to five water samples per dive | Collects water from selected depths. |
| Environmental sensing and navigation | CTD system and sonar | Provides environmental measurements and information to support work around the site. |
The listed per-dive capacities are maximums in the factsheet, not typical yields or requirements. A dive’s actual collection depends on its scientific goals, conditions, and available payload. The factsheet’s January 2025 revision date matters if exact specifications are important, since vehicle configurations can change. Consult the NOAA factsheet for its stated configuration.
How to compare exploration vehicles
There is no single specification that defines what a deep-sea vehicle can do. Useful comparison points include maximum operating depth, camera and still-imaging capability, lighting arrangement, sampling payload, and the sensors and navigation equipment available to the pilots. NOAA lists a 6,000-meter capability for both Deep Discoverer and Seirios, while the equipment details above describe Deep Discoverer in particular. The supplied factsheet does not justify assuming that every ROV has the same cameras, tools, or capacity.

This is a comparison of specialized ship-based research systems, not a consumer-buying guide. A vehicle’s useful configuration depends on the questions a mission is trying to answer and the equipment it carries. For exact specifications, the factsheet’s revision date should be checked because published configurations can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy shipboard coordination and engineering matter
An ROV mission depends on coordination between pilots, shipboard staff, and the vehicle’s mechanical and electronic systems. Manipulator arms, sample boxes, and adjustable lights rely on hydraulic systems. A NOAA 2026 shakedown feature explains that a hydraulic-control problem can prevent pilots from manipulating objects, collecting samples, or adjusting lights. This illustrates how one system can affect several tasks; it does not mean every mission encounters such a failure. NOAA’s 2026 shakedown feature provides operational context.
The team must also make choices during the dive. Time, payload capacity, and tool design constrain what can be collected, while cameras and navigation help prioritize observations. A close-up image may document an organism and its setting; a physical specimen permits examination beyond what the image alone can show. Neither form of evidence replaces the other.
Engineering reliability matters because the vehicle’s research work depends on functioning systems as well as a suitable payload. The hydraulic example is a practical reminder that a technical issue can affect more than sample collection: it can also limit object handling and the adjustment of lights used to see the site. The control room’s diagnostic displays give the team information about vehicle systems while pilots direct the work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Images and samples answer different questions
- Images and video record visible features and the context around them, often across a wider area than the few objects that can be recovered.
- Physical specimens allow closer study of selected organisms or geological material, but represent only what the team chose and was equipped to collect.
- Water samples can support analyses such as eDNA work, depending on how they are collected and processed.
- Vehicle measurements such as depth, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen help characterize the conditions in which observations were made.
Together, these records let researchers connect what a place looks like with what selected material and measurements reveal. NOAA’s deep-sea exploration explainer provides broader context for vehicle equipment and imaging.

How does a deep-sea ROV collect images in the dark?
It uses onboard lights, including LED lamps on Deep Discoverer, to illuminate the area its cameras can see. The resulting images cover the visible, illuminated scene, not everything at the site.
What samples can Deep Discoverer collect?
Its listed equipment includes manipulator arms, biological and rock boxes, a rotary suction sampler, and Niskin bottles for seawater. NOAA’s January 2025 factsheet lists capacity for up to 11 biological or geological samples and five water samples per dive; those are vehicle capacities, not guaranteed collections.
How can ROV-collected seawater be used?
In one NOAA 2023 expedition, water collected at different depths with vehicle-mounted Niskin bottles was filtered aboard ship for later eDNA analysis. Processing depends on the sample and research question.
Are images and collected specimens interchangeable?
No. Images and video record visible features and their setting, while physical samples allow closer study of selected material. Sampling is selective, and imagery can document discoveries even when no specimen is recovered.
The Bottom Line
Deep-sea ROVs combine ship-directed piloting, lighting and cameras, navigation and sensors, and sampling tools to document places beyond diver reach. Images show the visible scene; selected biological, geological, and water samples let researchers investigate material more closely. The equipment and capacities described here are specific to NOAA’s Deep Discoverer and Seirios, not universal specifications for every ROV.
