Gorilla Tag built a Quest audience through a mix of arm-powered movement, multiplayer play and player-to-player discovery—while it was distributed through App Lab, before its December 2022 launch on the main Meta Quest Store. App Lab helped Another Axiom reach players and iterate quickly, but the available accounts do not establish that any single feature or channel caused the game’s growth.
What “Quest’s not-store” meant for Gorilla Tag
App Lab was a Quest distribution channel, not a requirement to sideload the game. Players could find, download and update apps through the familiar Quest interface, while developers could release software outside the main Quest Store. Another Axiom says Gorilla Tag launched on Steam Early Access and SideQuest in February 2021, then debuted on Oculus App Lab in March 2021. It reached the main Quest Store in December 2022.
That sequence matters: Gorilla Tag was not permanently outside the official storefront, and the sources do not say that it was rejected from the main store. It had already attracted a sizable audience before the store launch. In its April 24, 2023 announcement, Another Axiom said the game had passed five million unique users, most of whom had played through App Lab.

How Gorilla Tag got popular
Movement made the controls the central attraction
Instead of steering with conventional thumbsticks or teleporting, players push against the environment with their hands and arms to run, jump, climb and tag. Another Axiom’s launch description presented simple tag and infection play, multiple maps, private rooms and games of up to ten players.

This design gives players a concrete physical skill to explore: movement is immediately visible to others, while learning to move around the environment creates room for improvement. That is a plausible reason the mechanic supported repeat play and social interaction, not a measured finding about what caused retention.
Newcomers learned by watching and asking
The opening experience deliberately avoided a conventional tutorial. Creator Kerestell Smith described starting players in a cave with an arrow pointing outward; beyond it, newcomers could see a live game in the forest. The developers expected them to explore, observe other players and ask questions.

Smith said, “We’re really relying on social connections to disseminate information.” Meta’s interview describes players teaching newcomers, so other people in the game could serve as informal guides. Experienced players could demonstrate movement, and beginners had reasons to interact. The accounts explain the design intention and describe this behavior; they do not quantify its effect on retention or referrals.
App Lab enabled iteration as well as access
Meta’s account of the development process says Smith used App Lab to push updates, fix bugs and address server issues quickly. Another Axiom also had an early patch-testing group, described by Meta as an “Alpha Squad,” whose members provided feedback. Smith called the faster cycle important: “I was able to really rapidly update my iteration cycle because I was just trying to get as many things into the game, update things, fix bugs, deal with server issues, so being able to access all of those things was kind of the most important thing for me.”

In this account, App Lab’s significance was practical: it gave the team a way to reach Quest players while continuing to develop the game with feedback. Meta attributes audience growth in part to engaging gameplay and strong word of mouth, but the material does not isolate App Lab’s contribution or show how many players it brought in.
Word of mouth and community amplified the game
Another Axiom described the growth as organic. In its April 2023 announcement, Smith called the game’s “100% organic growth” a testament to its “spirit of play.” Meta’s platform article also points to word of mouth and community members helping build awareness. These are the developer’s and platform’s descriptions, not independently audited findings that rule out every other factor or prove a single cause.

The game’s mechanics and onboarding offer a coherent explanation for how that kind of spread could work: players could see movement skills in multiplayer, learn from other people and bring friends into a game that encouraged interaction. The sources support this as an explanation of the design and reported growth, not as a quantified viral loop.

The clearest dated scale figure is Another Axiom’s announcement of more than five million unique users by April 24, 2023. The studio also said most of those users had played through App Lab. Its company history lists more than 760,000 active players on Christmas Day 2022, but does not define “active players” beyond that phrase.

Another Axiom’s stats page reports more than one million daily active users, more than three million monthly active users, over ten million lifetime players, revenue above $100 million, nearly 60 minutes per play session, a Discord community above 350,000 and more than ten billion TikTok views of #gorillatag. The page’s publication date is not visible in the retrieved text, so these should be treated as undated developer-reported figures—not current measurements or independently verified totals. The page does not specify a platform or revenue breakdown.
Another Axiom described Quest Gorilla Tag as free-to-play in its 2023 store-launch announcement, which also mentioned cosmetics and a limited-time bundle of wearable virtual items and in-game currency. The available figures do not establish average player spending or how much revenue came from any one platform or purchase type.
